KUNUNURRA - LET’S TALK ABOUT HOW WE CAN SAVE THE CAMBRIDGE GULF!

Right now, a massive sand mining project is threatening the stunning, ecologically pristine Cambridge Gulf just north of Kununurra.

Multinational corporation Boskalis wants to mine for sand in the stunning gulf, home to important nesting areas for flatback turtles, and provides habitat for the Australian Humpback dolphin and snubfin dolphins - all recognised as vulnerable species!

The last thing the Cambridge Gulf needs is a Dutch-owned mining company sucking up & exporting 70 million cubic metres of sand over the next 15 years to be used in overseas construction projects.

This project is currently sitting on the desk of WA Environment Minister Mathew Swinbourn, waiting for him to make a decision - so we still have a chance to stop this!!

In the early 1990s, Cambridge Gulf Exploration NL undertook offshore exploration in Cambridge Gulf searching for alluvial diamonds. I jumped the gun a little on my recent post last night. As some people (Myself included) thought that the recent announcement was the overall Greenlight, this isn't the case.

The Boskalis Cambridge Gulf Marine Sand Sourcing Project has received approval from the Federal Government, However this is NOT the State approval.

This was a significant step forward for the proposal, but it is important to understand that it is not the final approval needed for the project to begin.

The proposal has been assessed by the WA Environmental Protection Authority, which recommended that it may proceed subject to conditions. However, the project still requires final approval through the Western Australian State process.

In simple terms, the project has received the federal green light, but it has not yet received all the approvals required to proceed.
