Kogarah Public School’s current grounds and buildings are completely inadequate and must be urgently rebuilt. Our school Kogarah Public School is running at 150% of its capacity, and enrolments will soon increase dramatically. Our school has been the victim of poor planning with and is set to welcome more students due to the implementation of the George’s River Council’s’ vision for the Kogarah N
orth Precinct – an area of high density, multi storey residential living surrounding our school resulting in privacy concerns, overshadowing and overcrowding. Our children are already paying a high price, and their privacy and safety are at risk, yet the Government has no plans to ensure their safety and wellbeing. The plan Kogarah North Precinct is already well underway with 10 storey buildings overshadowing our playground and apartments looking directly into our children’s classrooms and playground, leading us to fear that they will see something inappropriate, or worse, and distracting them from their learning. Our school does not have a school hall, therefore all assemblies, parent sessions and activities such as dance/gymnastics must be held outside, in view of the apartments. Based on current enrolment trends, our school will run out of classrooms in 1 or 2 years’ time. There has been no forward planning for the classroom space the school will need for the increased enrolments that will come from having hundreds more residences in the school’s catchment. Our school has very small grounds and has run out of space for any more demountables. We ask the Legislative Assembly to help us secure a rebuild of Kogarah Public School with allocated funding to:
- ensure our children’s privacy and safety
- ensure there is space for the growth in enrolments in our catchment, and
- ensure our children have adequate facilities to learn in, including a school hall.
