Did you know Kingston District Scouts has its very own campsite?
Hidden in the beautiful Yarra Ranges, just outside Launching Place, Illalangi Campsite has been part of the Scouting story for generations. The site was first established in 1938 by the Ion L. Idriess Rover Crew from the 2nd Mordialloc Scout Group, who worked to transform the property into their own piece of bush for camping and outdoor adventure.
The name Illalangi comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “hut on the hill,” which perfectly captures the spirit of the site and its connection to the surrounding bushland.
Today, Illalangi continues to be a place where Scouts can camp, explore nature, practise bushcraft skills and build lifelong friendships.
🔨 Exciting things are happening right now.
A major rejuvenation effort is underway led by our District Leader Illalangi, Kent, together with a fantastic team of Rovers, Leaders and Venturers. Their work includes:
• Improving site access and usability
• Clearing and restoring camping areas
• Planning for a new environmentally friendly toilet block
• Bringing the campsite back to life for the next generation of Scouts
This project is about more than just maintenance — it’s about protecting and revitalising a piece of Scouting heritage so young people across Kingston District can experience real outdoor adventure.
A huge thank you to everyone volunteering their time and energy to make this happen. The future of Illalangi Campsite is looking bright.
