Sunday is the winter solstice! β„οΈπŸŒ

It will be the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. Then the days slowly start getting longer again. πŸŒ±β˜€οΈ

To mark the event, there's three winter solstice swims in our local area!

Today (Friday) is the Carrum Winter Swim held by the Carrum Surf Life Saving Club

And tomorrow (Saturday) is the Bonbeach Life Saving Club Inc. winter swim.

Finally, on Sunday Aspendale Life Saving Club will be hosting their winter solstice swim.

Check out each page for further details.

This is a fabulous story about a local photographer and citizen scientist finding new species of native orchids, right in our local area!

You never know what you might see in our local nature reserves when you spend time in them πŸŒΏπŸŒΌπŸ¦πŸžπŸ„β€πŸŸ«

Robert Mitchell's interest in rare orchids in the area around Frankston results in him naming three and penning a research paper.

Check out the growth on these Coast Daisy-bushes! (π˜–π˜π˜¦π˜’π˜³π˜ͺ𝘒 𝘒𝘹π˜ͺ𝘭𝘭𝘒𝘳π˜ͺ𝘴).

Planted by the group last July as small tubestock, now they are flourishing shrubs on their way to dune domination! :-)

Join in the fun at our next working bee, this Saturday, 20 June, 10 am -12 pm at the Bonbeach Foreshore.

Winter and early spring is a great time for revegetation and planting so our group will be doing more of this over the coming months.

We've had some wild weather this week! Here's high tide during the week with the waves washing right up on the beach and over the Patterson River breakwater. The tern does seem to mind :-)

What are the most commonly spotted birds in Australia? Check out the recent Bird Count results from BirdLife Australia. Which species do you see around your house?

On the Bonbeach foreshore, Red Wattlebird is one of our most common birds. The Coast Banksia trees are a very important habitat and food source for this species.

Earlier this week we had a very low tide, exposing the margins of the Patterson River. A beautiful Royal Spoonbill (π˜—π˜π˜’π˜΅π˜’π˜π˜¦π˜’ 𝘳𝘦𝘨π˜ͺ𝘒) took advantage of the river edge, feeding in the shallows.

Check out the video to see how it feeds. According to the Australian Museum they eat fish, shrimps and other crustaceans and aquatic insects: "The structure of its bill limits it to feeding in water that is less than 40 cm deep over sand, mud or clay, where it can sweep the water with its bill."

You can see the Royal Spoonbill is also accompanied at various times by a cormorant, also feeding in the shallows!

Last Saturday we had one of our biggest groups so far! The team removed huge piles of weeds and we even started to expand our work area. The main weeds we tackled were Gazania, Marram Grass and Bridal Creeper. We then planted some tubestock. There were also biscuits!

It was beautiful sunny weather but the rain since then will have helped the new plants settle in. The major planting days will be in the coming months.

See everyone Saturday 20th of June for the next working bee.
