A Very Special Visitor to Serving Hope on Wheels
There are some evenings at Serving Hope on Wheels that are extra special, and this was certainly one of them.
We were incredibly honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, to our food van at Salvation Army Park in Dural.
Serving Hope on Wheels is a Kenthurst Rotary project, proudly delivered in partnership with The Salvation Army (Salvos). Together, we are supporting people and families in our local community who are doing it tough.
What began as an idea to provide a hot meal has grown into so much more. Each week, our volunteers provide hot meals, pantry supplies, groceries and other essentials, but just as importantly, we provide friendship, conversation and a place where everyone is welcome.
What made the Governor’s visit particularly special was the way she connected with the people who use the van.
Many of those who came along that evening never imagined that someone in such an important position would take the time to speak with them personally. Yet Her Excellency did exactly that.
She sat and chatted with them, listened to their stories and treated everyone with genuine warmth and respect. For some, that simple conversation meant more than they could put into words. They felt seen, heard and valued.
One of the things we hear regularly at the van is that people don’t want to be judged for needing a little help. They simply want to be treated with dignity. Her Excellency demonstrated that beautifully.
For our volunteers, it was a very proud moment to see her experience firsthand what happens at Serving Hope on Wheels — the cooking, the serving, the laughter, the conversations and, most importantly, the sense of community.
Her visit was also a wonderful recognition of what can be achieved when Kenthurst Rotary and the Salvos work together, supported by an incredibly generous local community.
We are so grateful to Her Excellency for taking the time to visit us, meet our volunteers and, most importantly, talk to the people we are here to support.
For those who use the van, it was an evening they will remember for a long time.
Sometimes it only takes a few minutes of someone’s time to make another person feel truly valued. Her Excellency did just that.
