Drones, draughting & driver training. 🚒

Over the last few weeks the brigade has been busy ramping up training with recent and new qualified members.

We’re introducing new members to some of the local fire trails, draughting water out of the Kangaroo river, had a drone demonstration on how the RFS is introducing more thermal imaging drones for bushfire surveillance, practised grassfire tactics and more.

Hi KV,

A quick heads up regarding our regular training sessions on Wednesday nights. We are very lucky to have a presentation by the Shoalhaven District about how the RFS are using drones for detecting bushfires in our landscapes.

Please be aware that there might be flashing lights down at our station and the sound of a drone in the air tomorrow night. All flights (if any) will follow CASA regulations and laws.

Here’s something we’ve been working on…

Around this time of year the NSW Rural Fire Service conducts open days and Get Ready Weekends. These events help inform residents of what they can do to be prepared for a potential bushfire.

We thought we’d try something different.

This weekend we instead travelled out to a neighbourhood group of Kangaroo Valley and conducted a thorough, hands on, face to face, bushfire readiness workshop.

As a trial, a select number of KV Fire Brigade members met with the Mackay’s Road community group to answer people’s specific questions and support new ideas.

Questions, conversations, examples, fire history, property bushfire plans, static water sources, access to properties, what should I do in case of a bushfire - all this and more.

Thank you to all those who came along, to Michael Andrews for hosting and to all of the local volunteers who shared their experience and knowledge.

With ever increasing chances of hotter and drier weather over summer, we’re looking to do more these workshops around the neighbourhood groups of Kangaroo Valley and supporting all of those who are interested.

This week’s training - PILE BURN. 🔥

This week our brigade members traveled out to Mackay’s Road to support a local resident with three pile burns.

It was another great exercise observing fire conditions and giving new members the opportunity to practise.

These weekly training sessions are great for crew chemistry, being able to get local area familiarisation and being able to assist local property owners.

Do you know what this sign means?

The Static Water Supply (SWS) Program is a free service that enables residents to help local firefighters by identifying existing water supplies (such as dams, tanks or swimming pools) on their property that could be used for firefighting purposes.

The NSW Rural Fire Service provides specially designed SWS signs for properties with suitable water supplies. This helps firefighters access vital water supplies quickly and efficiently to help them defend your property.

If you have a pool or tank with more than 3,000 litre capacity and wish to be part of the SWS Program, please contact your local Fire Control Centre or email [email protected], with your name, phone number, address, postcode, local government area.

Late on Friday night Kangaroo Valley RFS responded to a two car motor vehicle accident on Moss Vale Road, involving two people and four dogs trapped in their vehicle.

A joint agency effort got all to safety and a re-opening of the road. Many thanks to all of the volunteers and first responders who attended.

Fire permits in Kangaroo Valley and the broader Shoalhaven region have been suspended due to the high fire danger rating tomorrow.

FIRE PERMITS SUSPENDED – Saturday 5th September 2026

The Shoalhaven is forecast to experience HIGH fire danger conditions on Saturday 5th September 2026. As a result of the forecast all fire permits issued by the RFS have been suspended in the Shoalhaven for this time.

Windy and dry conditions will create a real fire risk across our landscape. It's incumbent upon all of us to be cautious with the use of fire.

ONE EMBER CAN END IT - Embers from a fire can spread quickly and quite a distance, putting communities well away from the main fire at risk.
