It's Day 2 of our Week of Action and we’re turning our attention to the future. 📮

When we talk about building Schools For Our Future, it can mean many things. Should the focus be on inclusion and wellbeing? How about environmental sustainability? Or perhaps integrating wraparound services?

Today. on Mabo Day, ACSSO acknowledges the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and the landmark decision that recognised the traditional land rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Mabo Day provides an opportunity for school communities to reflect on the importance of truth-telling, respect, and reconciliation, and to deepen our understanding of the histories, cultures, and enduring connection to Country of First Nations peoples.

Today we celebrate Public Education Day — a chance to recognise the incredible role government schools play in shaping Australia’s future.
Every day, public schools open their doors to every child, in every community, supporting learning, wellbeing, inclusion and opportunity. They are places where young people discover who they are, build friendships, develop skills for their future, and are encouraged to be the best they can be.
Public education works because of people — students, teachers, school staff, families, carers, volunteers and communities working together.
At ACSSO, we are proud to stand alongside the families of more than 2.6 million students in government schools across Australia and to continue advocating for strong, inclusive and properly resourced public education for every child.
Happy Public Education Day!

National Reconciliation Week is a time for reflection, learning, and action as we work together towards a more just, equitable, and reconciled Australia.

ACSSO acknowledges the strength, resilience, and enduring cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples — the First Peoples of this land. We recognise that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility and that education plays a vital role in building understanding, respect, and truth-telling for future generations.

This week, we encourage school communities, families, and students to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful conversations that support reconciliation in action.

Today, on National Sorry Day, ACSSO acknowledges the strength, resilience and continuing cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and remembers the Stolen Generations and the lasting impact of policies of forced removal on children, families and communities.

As the national voice for families of students in government schools, we recognise that education has an important role to play in truth-telling, healing and building understanding. Schools are not only places of learning — they are places where young people develop identity, belonging, respect and connection.

National Sorry Day invites all Australians to reflect on our shared history and consider the responsibility we each hold in creating a future where every child feels seen, valued and connected to culture, community and opportunity.

We thank Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, educators, Elders and communities who continue to lead, teach and strengthen our school communities every day.

Sorry Day reminds us that listening matters. Relationships matter. Families matter.
