Wildlife Cameras at night. The Iluka Koala Reserve is currently undertaking wildlife monitoring inside the reserve. We are keeping records of which animals venture into our reserve. At night we see the local natives, like this Glider, and the local non natives, like this pig.

We at the Iluka Koala Reserve, would like to share this video created by the Fire To Flourish team who provided recent funding for our 2025 Water for Wildlife Project in Iluka. So many locals assisted us to provide a safe water supply for our local wildlife, you will meet some in the video. Thanks to Landcare Volunteers, Yaegl Bush Regen Team, Iluka Woombah Mens Shed, local tradesmen from Iluka and Fire to Flourish. Our local wildlife will benefit greatly this coming Summer.

This video highlights how collaboration between people and their environment builds stronger community connections. It demonstrates that partnerships between...

On the 23 September, 2025 we celebrated the successful completion of our dream "Water for Life" Project in the Iluka Koala Reserve. Many volunteers and skilled local tradespeople from Iluka worked together over the past 4 months to construct what could be the tallest bird bath in the Clarence Valley! The Local Iluka Woombah Mens shed took our initial design and perfected it, building a beautiful and hardwearing 3 metre high water trough for local wildlife. Being so high up off the ground means birds and small marsupials are safe from predators. Local tradesmen and volunteers from Landcare and the Iluka Koala Reserve, worked together with the Yaegl Mirran Aalgarr Bush Regen Team to install the waterer, trench in pipework and then w**d and plant the reserve with many new plants. There were many people who supported our idea to get a safe water supply into the reserve to protect our animals during drought and in case of bushfire.. We are very grateful to Auntie Glenda, the Fire to Flourish Program, NRCF Northern Rivers Community Fund, Timothys Concrete, Landcare, Mirran Aalgarr Bush Regen and others who choose to do their very valuable work quietly without recognition. Yaegl artist Kaluha Charlton has painted path markers along the walkway, depicting animals of the reserve. The project was made possible because Crown Lands NSW entrusts crown land to the management of local people, and due to grant funding from FIre to Flourish and NRCF,. It was supported by research completed by Dr Valentina Mella who has done extensive studies about koalas and their water needs. WIRES donated us components of the waterer, designed by Gunnedah farmer Rob Frend. It really has been a shared effort by many people. And our wildlife loves it. We are regularly monitoring the waterer, taking photos and recording the wildlife that visits. A selection of photos taken by Maiara Da Rocha Skarheim. for you to enjoy.

The volunteers of the Iluka Koala Reserve have installed safe clean water baths in the reserve for our native animals.

πŸ”₯🌑️ Temperatures are heating up, and our wildlife need your help to stay cool and hydrated! πŸ’¦

Australia’s unique environment often swings between extremes of too much or too little water. During hot weather, a constant source of clean water is vital for our wildlife to drink and clean themselves. Dehydration can be life-threatening, and many species rely on bathing to maintain healthy coats or feathers, which is essential for their survival.

Here’s how you can help:

βœ… Place clean water sources around your yard, preferably in the shade, and at various heights and depths to accommodate different species like birds, mammals, insects, and reptiles. πŸ¦˜πŸ¦πŸ¦”

βœ… Regularly clean and disinfect water containers to prevent the spread of disease.

βœ… Ensure water containers have escape routes, such as sticks or rocks, to help small animals safely exit. This preventing drownings in ponds, pools, or water troughs.

βœ… Enjoy the beauty of wildlife visiting your water stations for a much-needed drink or bath.

Let’s keep our wildlife safe and hydrated during the heatwave!

The securing of land for environmental protection is part of how we can save our native animals from.extinction. In Iluka we are fortunate that those before us campaigned for and secured the World Heritage Rainforest and the Iluka Koala Reserve for protection. These areas were at risk of sand mining in the past. Fortunately people of the time, did just what this group of people have just done for the mid North Coast. Koalas need trees.

The Great Koala National Park was announced today at a morning media conference in Bongil Bongil National Park Picnic Area near Coffs.

What an amazing day for koalas and great gliders on the mid north coast and for the groups and individuals who have worked so hard especially over the past 2 1/2 years to keep the pressure on for the full 176,000ha to be included. We got there!!!

We’ve been inspired, hopeful, angry, sad, disappointed, impatient, frustrated, exhausted hopeful and finally elated! πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ¨πŸ¨πŸ¨πŸ¨πŸ¨πŸ¨πŸ¨β€οΈβ€οΈ

September is Save the Koala Month. We are doing our part in Iluka, with land permanently dedicated as a Koala Reserve, our landcare team continuously planting Eucalypts on the Iluka Peninsular over the past 20 years and now a committed water supply for our native animals.
