What a Great Safety Day we have had with students from Callala Public School.
Members instructed the children on Home Fire Safety for Winter.
We covered things like Home Fire Evacuation, going to a safe place ( as discussed with parents)calling 000, knowing your address & being able to answer other questions that may be asked.
We smoked up our training room to simulate a room full of smoke & to “ Get Down Low & Go, Go, Go"
along with Stop Drop & Roll.
We also talked about getting too close to FirePits & home heaters & the importance of reminding parents about cleaning the lint filter in the clothes dryer & not to leave batteries on charge for long periods.
From the students responses they have had a great day. Thank You to our members who attended & to their employers, who have allowed them the time to assist with this great learning day.

The statutory bushfire danger period in the Shoalhaven ends at midnight on March 31.

Landowners in Rural Fire District who undertake vegetation pile burns after this date do not require a fire safety permit - however you still have an obligation to notify the RFS and your neighbours at least 24 hours before you commence burning.

Visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au and click on the NOTIFY portal.

Don’t forget to check the weather forecast; bush and grass fires still occur in Autumn and Winter if conditions are conducive to the ignition and spread of fire.

Today, we were proud to take delivery of our new appliance, replacing our 25-year-old Category 1 Heavy Bush Tanker with a newer six-year-old model.

Our outgoing Cat 1 has faithfully served our community for over two decades, protecting lives, property, and the village of Callala Bay and outside our village on countless occasions. It has been an integral part of our brigade’s history and operational capability.

As our brigade continues to grow, and as the responsibilities entrusted to us by the NSW Rural Fire Service expand, it is essential that we evolve to meet these increasing demands. The introduction of our new Category 1 tanker represents a significant step forward in capability and crew safety.

This appliance provides enhanced safety features for our firefighters, improved operational functionality to better protect our community, and most significantly the introduction of Breathing Apparatus (BA) capability. This advancement not only improves protection from smoke and hazardous fumes but also enables our brigade to respond to a broader range of incidents where conditions are not survivable without specialised equipment and training. These include vehicle fires, gas-related incidents, and structural fires.

Several members of our brigade are already qualified in structural firefighting and Breathing Apparatus operations, with others currently completing their training. This progression strengthens our capacity to operate as a structural firefighting brigade while continuing to deliver our core bushfire response capabilities.

We look forward to continuing to serve and protect Callala Bay with this enhanced capability. If you see our new truck out and about in the village, please give us a wave.

Last night 14 members along with one member from Callala Beach & Currarong Brigades completed their First Aid training & CPR at our station.
Thank You to South Coast First Aid, Colleen for a very enjoyable evening. Colleen used scenarios that we as Fire Fighters may come across whether it be MVA’s, House fires or treating Fire fighters to name a few.

Being a Firefighter isnt just fighting fires.
Our brigade had three members attend the RFS Community Education Stand at the Nowra Show on Fri & Sat, with our Category 7 Truck.
In very hot conditions our members delivered information on fire plans, membership & equipment carried on our trucks along with members from various Shoalhaven Brigades.

It was a very successful display & Thank those community members who stop & had a chat.

🏕️ Packing up camp today? The job isn't finished until the fire is cold. Even if the flames are gone, hot coals can smoulder underground for days and reignite when the wind picks up.

Please remember: Burying a fire does NOT extinguish it. It just insulates the heat.

Follow these steps to ensure your campfire doesn't become a bushfire:

💦 Drown it: Pour water on the fire until the hissing stops.

🪵 Stir it: Use a shovel or stick to stir the ashes and break up the coals. This ensures the water reaches the heat at the bottom.

🪣 Drown it again: Apply more water to the stirred area.

✋ Check it: Hold the back of your hand near the ashes to feel for radiating heat.

If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave. Keep pouring and stirring until the ground is cold.

Safe to touch. Safe to leave.
