Our first swim of spring was the last of the winters swimming! Today was the Wobbegongs Age Championships Race Day.

This was a day of no handicaps and no wetsuits, just a race against people in our own age groups. Though some of us only have one member in the age group. Lionel we are looking at you. You’re an inspiration.

This was a fun day, with lots of chatter on the beach as we watched the races and enjoyed another glorious day of sunshine, blue skies and gentle breezes. The water was crystal clear. Huskisson Beach really is a little pocket of paradise here in the bay.

We’ve been exceptionally lucky with the weather for this season of winter swimming, no Sundays were blown out, and that’s a new record.

Much appreciation to our BBQ team who had the snags, bread, mushrooms and onions ready for the hungry hordes after the races. And cake!

The Father’s Day raffle had many winners. We are so lucky to have so many generous donations. Much appreciated.

What a special way to round off the 2026 winter swimming season.

Next up are the National Championships in Perth in just a fortnight. Best wishes to all the Wobbegongs who are heading west to race for our club against the rest of the Aussie winter swimming clubs. We’ll be posting some photos of that.

But in the meantime, a big, big thanks to the committee, many of who have held their positions for ten years. All of the racers know how much effort the committee puts in and all are grateful.

And a big thank you to all the volunteers who set the swimmers off (thanks JD and Jacqui and Geoff) and who time keep and judge. There’s as much effort on the beach as there is in the water. The swimmers are very grateful. Thank you!

Here’s a video of today’s Heat 5, showing how the handicap system works.

As you’ll see, the race starts and then there is a count and swimmers start on the number set for their handicap - if they have one.

This means that the faster swimmers race up to the less speedy ones and everyone has a chance to win.

Steve and his handicap heroes work hard every week and then Karen makes sure all the numbers are on the website.

The handicapping really does give everyone a chance to win and a reason to race their best race. It’s part of what makes the Wobbegongs a really welcoming place for all swimmers.

What made everyone swim so fast today? Was it the bust-free handicapping to celebrate our last day of winter swim racing with handicaps? Or the absolutely pristine conditions, smooth seas, no wind and warm sunshine.

We had six heats with about 30 swimmers in total, including a visitor, Paul. Welcome, Paul, and well done for getting into the finals.

A potluck picnic and cups of tea and coffee on the beach in the sunshine rounded off a really lovely morning.

Next Sunday 6th September, we have the Club Champoinship Race Day where we race in age groups with no handicaps and no wetsuits - and it's going to be fun.

Our Fathers Day raffle will also be held next Sunday.

The sea temperature was 16 degrees, the wind was very light and the sky was blue. Our second last week of handicapped winter races was a delight.

A big welcome to Isabel who joined us for the first time, always great to welcome a new member. And it was lovely to see Seanna again this week, a visitor from up the coast.

There was one very unusual heat today - every single swimmer busted. That's a first in 10 years, says Steve our handicapping and race times guru.

Well done Dale who won the 50 m final and many congrats to Martin who won all three of his heats!

Afterwards up at Emma's Coffee Spot we enjoyed birthday cake to celebrate Lou's 70th birthday, plus lots of other very delicious treats. Lou won the raffle! Very fitting for his birthday, and he was in the finals too.

Thanks to all the volunteers, the starters and timekeepers and judges, and not forgetting the first aid volunteers and those who look after the kit. There's a whole team of people to keep the races racing and every one of them is much appreciated.

A big shoutout too to all of the social committee who create such warm and lively social events. We are fortunate to have the social committee looking after us so well, celebrating all the achievements and life milestones of our members and making newcomers and visitors feel very welcome.

What a glorious morning at our beach. Here’s a wee video of our 50 metre final. The handicaps are working well!!
Dale, whilst not first home, was the winner (Seanna breaking her HCP time limit), second was Martin, third was Lou (on his birthday and he won the raffle), Karen fourth and Irene fifth.

Everyone's a winner on Soup Day! And this was a morning when soup and bread on the beach after the races was very, very welcome. Big thanks to the soup and break makers, it was all delicious and warmed us up from the inside out.

It was raining when the set up happened, but we were lucky that the rain eased off for the racing itself. The skies were grey and there was swell but the lane ropes were fine with just the odd swimming being pushed here and there when a waves rolled by.

Very good racing again, with all heats running very smoothly. Big congrats to the finalists of the week: Mick, Jennie, Mish, Marg and Seana. Well done Mish on winning.

We just have one more racing day next Sunday and then the Finals on the 30th August.

Another Sunday with calm seas, we've been so lucky this season with the weather. A change was predicted with rain and strong winds but held off till later in the day. Again plenty of close racing, especially in the two shorter distance races. Emma doing very well, winning everything, and well done to Irene and Deb, making the 50 metre final, good to see the handicapping system working well, giving all a fair chance. The water clear and not too cold, around 15.5degC. This season (and maybe last), the water maybe 1.5degC above our historical averages and August normally our coldest month. Only a few Sunday's to go for our winter season and then the Club Championships early September.

A swell morning of winter swimming races!

The rolling surf meant that there was no line of buoys and no timekeeping this morning.

But still we raced! Through seaweed and murky water and up and over the swell. And it was still fun!

The water was chilly but warm sunshine and no wind meant it was easy to warm up.

The Wobbies were very well fed afterwards up at the BBQ area. Big thanks to Peter and Ines for doing the honours. Very much appreciated!
