Cats need your compassion. In an environment where cats are too often demonised, it must be remembered that cats are sentient beings. The Tasmanian government has an open cat management consultation which closes this Friday 15 May: https://nre.tas.gov.au/invasive-species/responsible-cat-ownership/cat-management-consultation . This consultation asks many questions.

The Australian Pet Welfare Foundation has answered these questions and made them available on their site: https://petwelfare.org.au/government-submissions/tasmania . Broadly they ask that cats, and people who love and care for cats, be treated with compassion and support, rather than with punitive, expensive and onerous measures. A few key points:
- no to cat registration, microchipping is sufficient
- support and education for cat carers to keep cats on their properties rather than legislation and punishment
-no to prohibiting the feeding of stray cats - feeding hungry cats lessens their reliance on catching food, and people providing care for these cats should be supported to bring these cats into homes, and use measures to reduce breeding
-being very clear about the distinction between lost or roaming companion cats, strays and semi domesticated cats that live near humans, and truly wild-living (feral) cats.

The Australian Pet Welfare Foundation have been doing wonderful groundbreaking work in this area, finding practical and compassionate solutions. Yes, it is contentious in some circles, but being compassionate and long-sighted should never be ignored.

We are thrilled to announce the successful applicants for the inaugural Animals Tasmania Small Grants Program.

Congratulations to:
• The Furneaux Collective (Flinders Island Wildlife Carer Education & Recruitment Campaign)
• Raptor Refuge (Flight Tunnel)
• Sloth Hill Animal Sanctuary Inc (Multi-species Enclosure)
• Companion Cows Australia (equipment to support their Assisted Rehoming and Rescue Program)
• Just Cats Tasmania (Emergency and Intensive care Breathing Support Upgrade for Burnie)
• Eventide Sanctuary (Animal Shelters)
• Tassie Wild Orphans (Intensive Care Unit)

We hope that the funds assist these organisations with the valuable work they are doing to help our non-human friends, both wild and domestic.

There were many grants requests that were very worthy, but we unfortunately didn’t have the funds to support them all and difficult decisions had to be made. However the process of running this pilot, and the type of help that animal sanctuaries and advocacy organisations requested, will be instructive in the development of the 2027 Small Grants Program which will open next January.

Thank you all for your support, and we look forward to seeing updates from the fund recipients!

The Legislative Council is expected to vote next week on the future of greyhound racing in Tasmania. Get on board and let the legislative councillors know that it is time to see the back of this cruel industry.

URGENT: In a matter of weeks, Tasmania’s upper house will decide whether greyhound racing is phased out.

Last year, the Tasmanian Government tabled legislation to phase out racing in the state, only months after announcing that it would withdraw public funding for the industry.

This is legislation that reflects growing public awareness about animal suffering, industry governance failures and the use of taxpayer funds to prop up an industry that ruthlessly exploits gentle dogs for gambling money.

Tasmanians are ready to move on: independent polling shows 74% of Tasmanians support the phase-out.

Now the legislation is approaching a decisive vote. If this opportunity is lost, greyhound racing cruelty could continue well into the 2030s.

Tasmania, speaking up right now matters. The vote will be close. Every message counts.

Take action for greyhounds now: https://animalsaus.co/3PmTohJ

Please make a submission to the APVMA to end use of these cruel rodenticides. Do this by 16 March to have your voice heard. See link in the article below.

No animal deserves to die this way.

Readily available in stores across Australia, anticoagulant rodenticides are widely used as a ‘quick fix’ method to control rats and mice numbers. But the impacts of this dangerous class of chemicals go far beyond their target species.

Poisoning rodents with anticoagulants causes them to suffer a painful, drawn-out death that can take several days, raising significant animal welfare concerns.
But the harm doesn’t stop there, local and native wildlife such as owls, kookaburras, or even domestic pets are at risk of being poisoned should they come across and consume a contaminated rodent.

The level of suffering for the target animals and the further risk of harm to other species is simply unacceptable and it doesn’t have to be this way. Already there are alternative methods in development, such as fertility control, and other more humane methods currently available.

In addition, increasing awareness and education of landholders to reduce food, water and shelter availability to rodents is an easy precaution that can go a long way to prevent and/or reduce rodent infestations.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (Australia’s national regulator) has not considered the serious animal welfare risks posed by anticoagulant rodenticides. Their proposed way forward will continue to allow unacceptable suffering for rodents and Australia’s wildlife and other animals.

Join the RSPCA in calling for anticoagulant rodenticides to be deregistered, to protect our wildlife, and promote humane methods in managing invasive species. No animal no matter how they’re classified should suffer like this.

Please make your submission by March 16th here: https://www.apvma.gov.au/news-and-publications/public-consultations/anticoagulant-rodenticides-proposed-regulatory-decision
