🎨🌿 TAS STATE WINNERS: EXETER PRIMARY SCHOOL! 🌿🎨

👀 SNEAK PEEK! Exeter Primary School in Tasmania's Tamar Valley is giving us a first look at their Paint Australia Beautiful mural, and it's already looking incredible! 💚

For Exeter's 320 students, the natural environment isn't just something they learn about, it's part of everyday school life. Wallabies, pademelons, possums, Green Rosellas and plovers are regular visitors, and kanamaluka / the Tamar River winds through the landscape where families live, work and play. 🦘🐦

🖌️ The mural
It all began as a legacy project for the 2025 Grade 6 Peer Leaders. When paint ran short, they gave the school's cow sculpture, Moonalisa, a colourful new lease on life instead. 🐄 This year's Peer Leaders have developed the original idea further, adding new ideas inspired by the school's changing waste management practices.

At its heart is the kanamaluka / Tamar River estuary, surrounded by the school's resident possum, wallabies, pademelons, Green Rosellas, plovers and their young, plus underwater species inspired by Beneath the Tamar. Even the seagulls have made it in, as they've become more common visitors in recent years! 🌊

🤝 What it means to them
Up to 20 students are involved, with the Grade 6 Peer Leaders leading the way, supporting one another, sharing their strengths and teaching each other to paint. Sustainability is already woven into life at Exeter, from rubbish audits and food scraps for the school chickens to Recycling Rewards and the Remade wearable arts program. ♻️

Through Paint Australia Beautiful, Exeter is celebrating the environment around them and encouraging everyone to look closer, work together and protect their little slice of the world for future generations. 💚

🎉 Congratulations to Exeter Primary School – Tasmania's State Finalist in the Paint Australia Beautiful Mural Competition! 🎨

Located on the back wall of the school swimming pool, visible from both the Grade 1/2 and Grade 3-6 playgrounds, and even spotted by the local community from the nearby walking track, this mural is more than just art – it's a legacy project! Shaped by Student Peer Leaders, it's designed to grow over time as future generations of Grade 6 Peer Leaders add their own voice and stewardship.

The design flows with the silhouette of Kanamaluka (the Tamar River), inspired by the book Beneath the Tamar, celebrating the river's wonder alongside the Tamar Valley's mountains and rich local biodiversity. It also champions sustainable practices like waste sorting and recycling, while the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags honour the diversity and cultures within the school community.

A beautiful reflection of Exeter's values – Be Your Best, Care for the Rest, Be Safe – and a wonderful example of students as active custodians of Kanamaluka and champions for Tasmania's environment. Well done, Exeter Primary! 💚🌊

🧺🌿 KAB Week Day 7: Zero-Waste Picnic 🌿🧺

We've reached the final day of Keep Australia Beautiful Week!

Today's challenge is to Care by enjoying a zero-waste picnic outdoors.

Pack your lunch in reusable containers, bring a refillable drink bottle, cloth napkins and reusable cutlery, and skip single-use plastics wherever you can. It's a great way to enjoy nature while reducing waste.

Before you leave, make sure you take everything home with you - and if you spot a few stray pieces of litter, why not leave the space even better than you found it?

Together, these simple habits help protect wildlife, support biodiversity and keep Australia's beautiful places healthy for generations to come.

🥾🌳 KAB Week Day 4: Bushwalk or Nature Trail 🌳🥾

Today's challenge is to Immerse yourself in nature.

Head to a local bushwalk, reserve or nature trail and slow down. Leave the headphones behind and take time to notice the texture of tree bark, the scent of the bush, native flowers, fungi, insects and birds along the way.

As you explore, remember to Leave Only Your Footprints. Take only photos, leave only footprints, and always take your rubbish home. Keeping our trails litter-free helps protect the plants, animals and ecosystems that make these places so special.

Healthy, litter-free habitats provide birds with the food, shelter and nesting spaces they need to thrive. By keeping our parks and reserves clean, we're helping protect Australia's incredible biodiversity.
