National Science Week Tasmania Each year in August, Tasmanians hold around 200 events for National Science Week across the state. Join us in a celebration of science!

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Running each year in August, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres. These events attract a wide audience from children to adults, and science amateurs to professionals. Over one million peo

ple participate in science events across the nation. Established in 1997, National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists’ to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public, and to encourage younger people to be fascinated by the world we live in. National Science Week is proudly supported by the Australian Government in a variety of ways, including the provision of up to $500 000 for the National Science Week Grants Program. Other partners include the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA).

Applications are now open for the 2026 Tasmanian STEM Excellence Awards! 🎉

As National Science Week gets underway, we're celebrating the opening of applications for the STEM Excellence Awards, recognising the researchers, innovators, teachers and science communicators who are making a difference across Tasmania. Since 2016, the awards have highlighted outstanding contributions to STEM and inspired the next generation of thinkers and problem-solvers. If you know someone deserving of recognition, applications are open until 27 September.

2027 National Science Week Grants Opening Soon!

🔬National Science Week will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2027. Grants are available to help you deliver a science engagement activity in your community.

We've updated the National Science Week grant guidelines for the 2027 round.

Key changes include:
- Increasing the minimum grant amount from $2,000 to $5,000
- Moving to a new four-year grant model, with one set of guidelines for rounds from 2027 to 2030

Come meet and celebrate our 2026 Fellows!

This Thursday 20 August, 6–7:30 pm at Boodle Beasley, our 2026 Fellows (Roberta Mensima Amoah, Liqun Guan and Kimiya Padidar) will share their research journeys and the inspiring STEMM outreach projects they have developed through their Fellowships.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come along! It’s a free event and a great opportunity to hear some inspiring stories, connect with Tasmania’s STEMM community and support three fantastic emerging women in STEMM.
