These appeals are from a range of incidents, boats coming together on separate courses, a prestart incident, confusion around instructions on the Sailing Instructions and protests that needed to be reheard.

Not Just Turns - Penalties for Breaking Rule 42 ๐Ÿ™…

Following on from our last article, hereโ€™s what happens if youโ€™re penalised under rule 42.

When judges are on the water observing under Appendix P of the Racing Rules of Sailing, they apply a sliding scale of penalties that become more severe with repeated infringements.

First penalty (P2.1): A Two-Turns Penalty. Complete it correctly - clear of other boats, then make two turns in the same direction (each including a tack and gybe). Failure = disqualification.

Second penalty (P2.2): You must promptly retire from the race. If not, youโ€™ll be scored DNE.

Third and further penalties (P2.3): You must promptly retire, otherwise you risk disqualification from the event with no score excluded and possible misconduct action.

Always check the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions, as penalties can be changed.

So, youโ€™ve been penalised for breaking rule 42 by a judge on the water. What next?

Matthew Wardell | Tasmania โœจ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Throughout National Volunteer Week, weโ€™ll be highlighting the 2025 Australian Sailing Volunteer of the Year Award nominees to recognise the incredible impact they make within our sailing community.

For more than 25 years, Matt has dedicated countless hours to growing and supporting sailing communities across Australia.

As Commodore of Port Esperance Sailing Club for seven years, Matt helped guide the club through one of the most challenging periods in its history - leading the reconstruction of the clubhouse and replacement of the club fleet while keeping the sailing community connected through COVID-19 and beyond.

Matt continues to volunteer as Rear Commodore, junior instructor, coach, rescue boat volunteer and President of the Tasmanian Sabot Association. His passion for making sailing accessible has helped more young sailors compete at state and national level, while strengthening connections between clubs across Tasmania.

Whether heโ€™s on the water coaching, supporting regattas, or advocating for the future of the sport, Mattโ€™s commitment to sailing and his community is truly inspiring.

Thank you, Matt ๐Ÿ’™
