1st Derwent Joey Scout Unit

1st Derwent Joey Scout Unit Joey Scouts is the first section of Scouts for children aged 5 to 8. Thursday 530-630pm (school term) Joey Scout families are welcome to get involved too!

1st Derwent Sea Scout Group is the premiere Scout Group in Tasmania. Founded in 1931 following the visit to Hobart by Lord Baden Powell, 1st Derwent has a long history of providing quality Scouting to the youth of Hobart and its surrounds. Joey Scouts is the first section of Scouts for young people aged 5 to 8, and it’s all about discovery and excitement! Friendship & Belonging
Making new friends

and building social skills are very important for Joey Scouts. For some, belonging to Joey Scouts provides an opportunity to mix with a new group of people, developing their confidence and ability to make new friends. There’s lots of opportunities for the whole family to make new friends and feel part of the community too. Adventure
Joey Scouts is often the first chance for young children to have a real adventure, like their first abseil, a visit to the local fire station, or even their first overnight camp! Leadership
Even from 5 years of age, Scouts begins to show young people how to lead by giving them the chance to play an active role in their program. They discuss the activities that Joey Scouts would like to do, and provide guidance that will enable a degree of independence and teamwork. As an example, individual Joey Scouts are encouraged to lead games for their Unit, making sure that everyone is included. Uniforms and Badges
Joey Scouts wear a blue polo shirt with brown sleeves. They will also be given a scarf and badges to sew on the uniform. Joey Scouts will be able to earn a number of badges as they progress through the section. When you first talk to the Joey Scout Leader about joining, they will give you information about what to wear and bring to your first meeting.

Our 1st Derwent Sea Scout Group Joeys enjoyed another 2024 Tassie Joey Commissioners Challenge with the Shelter Building Challenge. It was a great opportunity to practice our Bushcraft skills, with reef knots and talking about reasons for having a shelter when sleeping outdoors. It was hard to tell who was having more fun, the Joeys or their dads !

Our 1st Derwent Sea Scout Group Joeys enjoyed the Nature Collage Challenge apart of the Tassie Joeys Commissioner's "Let's get creative!" Challenge 2024.

Our Joeys were to venture into the great outdoors and collect a variety of natural materials like leaves, flowers, twigs, and stones. Then, unleash their creativity by turning these materials into a vibrant and imaginative picture.

And they nailed it ! Behold some of their amazing creations 🌸🌿

Today some of our joeys (& cubs & scouts) were fortunate enough to have afternoon tea with our Governor, Her Excellency Barbara Baker, and Professor Don Chalmers. The scouts had a chance to ask many questions before enjoying a lovely afternoon tea and a tour of the grounds. What a wonderful activity to round out the school holidays!

Dear Fellow Scouts,

I have received advice from Buckingham Palace to advise that following a thorough analysis of over one thousand organisations, His Majesty, King Charles III, has confirmed his delight to accept the Patronage of The Scout Association of Australia.

To this end, I am pleased to confirm that the peak award for the Venturer Scout section will be named The King’s Scout Award. Buckingham Palace has confirmed that His Majesty’s patronage would commence from the first anniversary of Their Majesties’ Coronation. Peak awards will be backdated to May 2024 and re-issued as King’s Scout Awards.

Scouts Australia is redesigning the certificate which will be available to Branches shortly.

On behalf of Scouts Australia, I have expressed our thanks and gratitude to His Majesty.

Yours in Scouting,

Brendan J Watson OAM
Chief Commissioner of Australia

Thank you all members for your inputs, comments and enthusiasm!.

Thank you also to Venturer Leader Sophia for running a week of youth engagement.

Our final version is shown below. This is our concept and we'll now ask the provider to refine it so that they can actually make it!

We will provide this, together with a sizing chart and an order form.

The Tasmanian manufacturer has a good reputation for making durable products so this shirt will be around for a number of years. A hint for Joey and Cub parents/carers: consider getting a shirt one or two sizes up to allow for growth.

The shirt will be for 1st Derwent members (youth, leaders, adult helpers, parents, siblings and ex-members.

The cost will be between $42 and $45.
