Wow!!! What an amazing native grassland garden Ben and Alison have created.
The club members and friends that braved the weather on Saturday were well rewarded with a real treat commencing with the beautiful wildflower display on Ben and Alison’s front yard, with the colourful wildflower plantings incorporating an ancient majestic eucalypt. We heard how Ben and Alison started with just a few plants bought from some nurseries in Melbourne and then collected their seed and undertook further propagation and planting to achieve their mass wildflower planting across the property in only three years.
At present the garden is a mass of colour with the yellow of the various daisies including podolepis, common everlastings and drum sticks and purples and blue with the chocolate lilies and blue bells and even some blue pincushions and stunning white of the Hoary Sunrays. The garden in the back yard also features a dry creek-bed that looks very effective and the way they have planted the native grassland replicates a natural grassland very effectively.
The veggie patch also looks fantastic and the chickens were enjoying themselves and have a great fancy looking pen and coop as well.
Overall the garden and the work they have put into it, including the intense propagate they have undertaken are very inspiring and I personally look forward to another visit next year at a slightly different time of year to capture a different set of flowers and colours as native grasslands can change very quickly across the flowering season.
