Today, AFAC News released the Bushfire Seasonal Outlook for Spring. NSW experienced unseasonably warm conditions over winter, while rainfall has been variable. With parts of northern and south-eastern NSW receiving below-average rainfall, these areas are entering spring drier than usual.

Forecasts for early spring continue to point to below-average rainfall and unusually warm conditions with fuels expected to continue drying across NSW. The highest risk is expected to be in northern and south-eastern NSW, as these areas are already rapidly drying out. Forested areas in these regions are experiencing high fuel loads and are dense and well-connected, which is of particular concern.

While fire risk is expected to be elevated through early spring, rainfall prospects for late spring into early summer have shifted to a slightly wetter outlook, although some uncertainty remains.

If you live, work, or travel through bush fire-prone areas, ensure you are prepared. Review and discuss your bush fire survival plan so you know what to do if threatened by fire.

Hi Gunning Community,

🥶🧊🔥🏠 WINTER FIRE SAFETY

ℹ️ With the current cold spell, a friendly reminder for everyone to take a few simple precautions now to help keep safe this winter.

✅ Test your smoke alarms – a working smoke alarm provides critical early warning and can save lives.

✅ Keep heaters clear – maintain at least one metre of space between heaters and curtains, furniture, bedding and other combustible materials.

✅ Never dry clothes on or over heaters – this is a common cause of winter house fires.

✅ Avoid overloading power points and switch off appliances when they're not being used.

✅ Have a home escape plan – make sure everyone in the household knows what to do and where to go if a fire occurs.

👍 Stay warm, stay prepared and stay fire safe.

-------------------------------------
ℹ️ Be fire safe this winter.

BREATHING APPARATUS OPERATORS’ COMPLETE RECERTIFICATION

🥶 On Thursday evening, 6th August 2026, Brigade members Lesley and Lynn braved the cold to complete their Breathing Apparatus (BA) recertification.

🧑‍🚒 Qualified BA operators must “go on air” every three months to maintain their currency and proficiency with the BA equipment.

🚒 Gunning-Fish River Brigade is one of four Brigades in the Southern Tablelands District equipped with BA.

💨 BA equipment enables the Brigade to operate effectively in hazardous, smoke-filled environments. Its value was demonstrated during the Brigade’s response alongside other emergency services to the three recent truck fires on the Hume Highway.

🧑‍🚒 This session also introduced Junior Member, Emily to the Brigade's BA operations, including setting up the decontamination zones, refuge area and the Breathing Apparatus Control Officer’s (BACO) role.

Hi Gunning Community,

We wish one of our own Brigade Members, former Brigade Captain and Southern Tablelands District Manager, Krystaal Hinds all the very best as she joins a 41-person contingent from across Australia and New Zealand deploying to Canada to support ongoing firefighting operations.

North America is currently experiencing significant wildfire activity, and the contingent will spend the next five weeks working alongside Canadian and other international firefighting personnel.

We are incredibly proud of Krystaal's selection for this important deployment and thank her for her dedication, professionalism and continued commitment to protecting communities, both here at home and abroad.

We wish Krystaal and the entire contingent a safe journey and successful deployment, and we look forward to welcoming her home in the coming weeks.
