⚠️🌧️ A WEEK OF RAIN, FLOOD RISK

Persistent and heavy rain will affect parts of NSW during at least the next seven days, with some areas possibly in line to receive more than one month’s rain in a matter of days.

Two separate streams of moisture-laden air will collide over eastern Australia in the coming week. One will come from winds in the middle to upper levels of the atmosphere carrying moisture across Australia from the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, in the lower atmosphere closer to the surface, winds will flow towards Australia from the Coral and Tasman Seas, providing a secondary source of moisture above eastern Australia.

In addition to this abundance of moisture, a series of upper-level troughs will provide ample atmospheric instability over parts of Queensland and NSW in the coming week. This will create an ideal environment for rain and thunderstorm development.

It is important to note that there is a high amount of model uncertainty regarding how much rain will fall over the next week and exactly where the heaviest falls will occur. There is good consensus that the northeast part of the state will receive heavy rainfall, possibly more than 100mm in the coming week, which would exceed the October average for some locations.

While rain is likely to fall over parts of NSW each day between now and at least next Wednesday, periods of heavier rain are possible, including this Thursday when heavier falls are expected to develop over northeast NSW.

The coming week’s rain and thunderstorms may cause both flash and riverine flooding. Be sure to check the latest severe weather, severe thunderstorm and flood warnings in your area for the most up to date information. We will continue to provide updates as the week progresses.

Working alongside Visit NSW State Forests and NSW Rural Fire Service, we're ramping up efforts across the GKNP footprint, including:

• Satellite detection expanded to help us maintain round-the-clock awareness of fire activity in the proposed park
• Adding 2 tankers and 14 small trucks to the local fire fleet
• Training more frontline firefighters
• Upgrading and maintaining critical fire trails
• Developing new fire mapping tools to assess conditions and risk
• Completing comprehensive fire planning, including a 3-year program of hazard reduction burning

A Total Fire Ban will be in place tomorrow, Monday 12 October 2026, for the Greater Sydney area with forecast Extreme fire danger and the Greater Hunter area with forecast High fire danger. Warm and windy conditions are forecast across parts of the state, increasing the fire danger.

Take action now. Know your fire risk and what you will do if fire threatens. Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

Today we remember the emergency services volunteers who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting their communities, at the annual Emergency Services Volunteer Memorial Service.

The names of volunteers enshrined on the Memorial recognise personnel from NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW SES, Marine Rescue NSW and VRA Rescue NSW.
