QLD Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Large Hail, Damaging Winds, Heavy Rain

For people in Southeast Coast and parts of Peninsula, Gulf Country, North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Central Coast and Whitsundays Forecast Districts.

Severe thunderstorms affecting parts of northern and eastern Queensland.

Weather Situation: Moisture and instability persist to the east of a surface trough through eastern Queensland, resulting in a broad risk of severe thunderstorms. About the southeast this trough is forecast to push offshore during the late afternoon and early evening.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in the Southeast Coast and parts of the Peninsula, Gulf Country, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Dalby, Gladstone, Kingaroy, Stanthorpe and Ipswich.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Herbert and Lower Burdekin districts. Locations which may be affected include Atherton, Gregory Springs, Mareeba, Abergowrie, Mount Garnet and Lyndhurst Station.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia and Central Coast and Whitsundays districts. Locations which may be affected include Marlborough and Dysart.

57 mm of rainfall recorded at Fish Hole Creek in the 30 minutes to 12:45 pm.

Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred, a category 2 system, is currently located 560km east of Brisbane and 560km east of Maroochydore.

Alfred is currently moving southeast, but it is expected to slow and turn west towards the Queensland coast later today.

Alfred's intensity may fluctuate between category 1 and 2 over the next few days, but it is forecast to cross the southeast Queensland coast at category 2 strength late on Thursday or early Friday morning.
Gales with damaging wind gusts to 120km/hr are expected to develop along the south-east Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales coasts from tomorrow.

Heavy rainfall is forecast for south-east Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales from tomorrow. Heavy to locally intense rainfall may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding may occur near and south of the cyclone centre as Alfred approaches the coast late on Thursday or early Friday. Flood Watches have been issued for these areas.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in parts of Central Highlands and Coalfields and Capricornia Forecast Districts.

Issued at 1:58 am Saturday, 15 February 2025.

Severe thunderstorms continuing over the Central Highlands and towards the Capricornia.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Capella, Dysart, Bogantungan and Mount Morgan.

83mm WAS RECORDED AT ARCADIA VALLEY IN THE 1 HOUR TO 10:08pm.

63mm was recorded at La Palma in the 1 hour to 11:25pm

44 mm was recorded at Mount Aunt (near Mareeba) in the 30 minutes to 4:54 pm.

35 mm was recorded at Raceview (near Charleville) in the 30 minutes to 4:46 pm.

Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:00 am.

QLD:
Uncertainty exists about how far south heavy rainfall may extend but at this stage, occasional rain areas, showers and storms with moderate to locally heavy falls are possible along part of the northern coast into part of the central interior. 24 hour totals of 40 to 90mm are likely with locally heavier falls closer to 100mm or higher being possible.
Isolated storms are possible in central and southwest Qld, tending scattered in the far north. Low to moderate potential exists for one or two of the storms in northwest and northern Qld to briefly become severe locally heavy rainfall but the remainder of the storms are unlikely to be severe.

MINOR TO MAJOR FLOODING IS CURRENT ACROSS MULTIPLE CATCHMENTS IN THE NORTH TROPICAL AND CENTRAL COAST

FURTHER MINOR FLOODING IS POSSIBLE IN PARTS OF THE BURDEKIN, PROSERPINE, GULF AND THOMSON RIVER CATCHMENTS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS

The monsoon trough extends across Far North Queensland with embedded tropical lows near the Gulf and northeast tropical coasts enhancing rainfall in their vicinity. The trough and associated lows will remain slow moving for several days. A ridge will persist over the east coast south of the trough for a few days, weakening a little from the middle of the week.

Catchments across the North Tropical Coast and Central Coast areas are very wet due to recent heavy rainfall and will respond quickly to further rainfall. Gulf and Thomson River catchments are dry to moderately wet in some areas.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast across parts of the Flood Watch area for at least the next couple of days.

River level rises are occurring and flooding is possible across the Flood Watch area. Elevated tides are also occurring which may enhance flooding in coastal parts of the Flood Watch area.

Further isolation of communities and disruption to transport routes is possible over the next few days.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

Upper Flinders River

Lower Flinders River

Cloncurry River

Norman River

Gilbert River

Belyando and Suttor Rivers to Burdekin Falls Dam

Cape River to Burdekin Falls Dam

Thomson River

From Cairns to Bowen, areas of heavy rainfall will continue today, with flash flooding and riverine flooding. Another 50-100mm is possible for coastal locations, with isolated heavier falls of up to and exceeding 200mm possible, particularly with any storm activity over the next 24 hours. For other areas of northern QLD, a few storms will likely become severe with heavy rainfall and localised damaging wind gusts.
