The best decision I made during my first pregnancy was choosing to go with the Midwife Group Practice🤰🏻

The continuous care was extremely beneficial and created a supportive environment for me and my partner.

Unfortunately, this program is hard to get in to and requires various steps to be completed before being deemed eligible.

Continuity of care should be made accessible for ALL women throughout their pregnancy journey, regardless of risk or socioeconomic factors.

Unfortunately, it’s all too common for mothers to share their birth trauma with pregnant family, friends, or even strangers. This can distort the mother-to-be’s perspective on childbirth and instill unnecessary fear. When I was pregnant and working as an Early Childhood Educator, I heard many stories from the mothers at the centre. I was often told how painful labour and birth were, with advice like, “Make sure to get an epidural” or “Just book a C-section; it’s much easier.” This negativity created a lot of anxiety for me around the idea of labour and birth.

Fortunately, one person, , shared her beautiful birth story and described how painless and euphoric childbirth could be. This inspired me to explore the concept of a physiological water birth, transforming my fear into a sense of preparedness and empowerment. I educated myself, allowing me to make informed choices and advocate for myself and my baby.

Creating awareness about childbirth is essential and can be done in a positive and empowering way. By sharing uplifting stories and discussing both challenges and successes, we create a supportive environment. This approach helps mothers-to-be feel informed, trust their instincts, and embrace their journey into motherhood with confidence. 🌸

✨Co-sleeping or bed-sharing with your baby can be safe and have numerous benefits for both mother and baby if done correctly✨

When we first become mothers, we’re often taught that the only safe way for our babies to sleep is in their bassinet. However, this one-sided view can leave parents feeling stressed and helpless when their baby won’t sleep independently. This stress can lead to unsafe sleep practices out of desperation and sleep deprivation. It’s time to raise awareness about alternative safe sleep options and promote proper education on co-sleeping and bed-sharing, breaking the stigma around them. 🌸

Do/did you co-sleep or bed-share with your baby’s? 💕

Does your menstrual cycle last longer than 28 days? Here’s how this can influence your pregnancy… 🤰🏻

The dated method to estimate gestational age is calculated by the time between the first day of your last menstrual period and the date of birth. This method goes off of a standard 28 day menstrual cycle and doesn’t account for a longer duration.

A Boston study investigated the link between gestational age and cycle length. The results found that using the method that calculates the estimated due date (EDD) by the day of the last menstrual period might lead to a higher rate of pregnancies being labeled as postdate (after 40 weeks) or post-term (after 42 weeks) in women with longer menstrual cycles.

Adjusting the due-date calculation method to account for longer cycles, would improve accuracy and reduce the misclassification of pregnancies as postdate or post-term. 🌸

⏸️ During labour a pause or a stall isn’t always a bad thing.

I remember when I was in labour with my son. After being in the shower for over an hour, my contractions were coming every 3 minutes and lasting about 1 minute each. I got out to get ready to head to the hospital, but when I laid down in bed, the contractions eased to every 5 minutes apart, allowing me to rest. I was a bit disappointed, thinking I’d have to wait longer to go to the hospital. However, after a bit of rest, the contractions came back strong and closer together, so I left for the hospital soon after. I delivered my beautiful boy 2 hours later 🤎

Stalls and pauses in labour can actually be quite beneficial. These moments of slowing down give your body a much needed break. This rest is important as it helps you gather strength for the final stages of labour. During these pauses, your body can recalibrate, and you can mentally prepare for the upcoming challenges. Rather than seeing these pauses as setbacks, they can be viewed as natural opportunities for rest and recuperation, making it easier to tackle the last stretch of labour with renewed energy. ⚡️

Here are some tips for achieving a low-intervention, physiological birth:

Labouring at home can significantly benefit the progression of your labor. Avoid anything that might disrupt the flow, and create a calm and serene environment - dim the lights, light some candles (if allowed), and play relaxing music.

Stay in tune with your body, and encourage others to observe rather than interfere with the natural process. Remember, birth is a natural event that occasionally requires medical intervention, not a medical procedure that sometimes occurs naturally. Trust in your body’s ability to guide you through the process. ✨

What helped you to achieve your physiological birth? I’d love to hear about it in the comments 👇🏼
