Celebrating Auslan Day by sharing some facts you may not know about the history of Auslan (Australian Sign Language);

•Early residential deaf schools founded in 1860 (Sydney, by Thomas Pattison) and soon after in Melbourne (by Frederick J. Rose) were crucial where Auslan developed.

• Auslan is derived from British Sign Language (BSL); both descend from early 19th-century BSL varieties used in British residential schools.

• Two main regional dialects (North Sydney and South Melbourne) emerged largely from the influence of the two major residential schools.

• During much of the 20th century signing was banned or discouraged in many classrooms, but residential life and community use preserved and evolved Auslan.

• Linguistic research since the 1980s (e.g., Johnston, Schembri, Woll) established Auslan as a natural language with distinct grammar and vocabulary, not a direct translation of English.

• Recognition and visibility increased from the late 20th century onward: more interpreter services, dictionaries and resources, and greater public/political awareness and advocacy for Auslan.

Lastly, we grateful for all those pioneers that worked so hard to maintain the exposure of Auslan without ruining the authenticity of the language.
