Gladstone Seafarers Centre

Gladstone Seafarers Centre Gladstone Seafarers Centre is a locally run Human Rights and Welfare charity servicing the Port of Gladstone.

The Centre was built in 1997 and is located on Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) land that was offered freely to The Gladstone Seafarers Centre. The Mission to Seafarers in Gladstone was established in 1970 by The Revd Peter Calaminus. The Port Authority provided him with an office and later he moved the MTS to a recreational centre for seafarers located at the Auckland Point Terminal. These were

closed as a result of further northern growth of the port. The present Mission Centre, now known as Gladstone Seafarers Centre, was constructed in its current location at the corner of Bryan Jordan Drive and Alf O’Rourke Drive with the financial support of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF). The Centre was built in 1997 and is located on Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) land that was offered freely to the Mission and selected as a central location to service the port and any future port expansion. When the captain mentioned that a chaplain from The Mission to Seafarers would be visiting, the relief on Sally’s face was immediate.

Many seafarers endure isolation, anxiety and family separation in silence, often without access to practical support or human connection.
For Sally, a third engineer from the Philippines, Ruth’s visit provided compassion and safety in a moment of need. A valuable reminder that she was seen, valued and not forgotten.

Seafarers remain among the yet least visible workers in the world. Behind every shipment, every stocked shelf, and many of the goods we rely on each day are people at sea whose work keeps life moving.

This reflection is a timely reminder that the global supply chain is not only about cargo and vessels, but also about the people who serve on board them.

As we near the end of Volunteers’ Week, we couldn’t let it pass without taking a moment to celebrate and thank the hundreds of incredible volunteers who help extend our reach worldwide.

At the heart of our ministry are people who give their time, compassion and energy so generously. Because of them, we are able to support seafarers around the world, offering vital help to those who spend long periods far from home.

Our volunteers serve in so many meaningful ways: visiting ships to offer a friendly face and a listening ear, driving seafarers to and from ports, welcoming them into our centres with warmth and hospitality, empowering the communities our seafarers come from, and so much more. Wherever they serve, they help ensure that seafarers feel seen, valued and cared for.

Without your help, we simply couldn’t carry out all the work we do. Your time and dedication make our work possible and bring immense value to the lives of seafarers. Thank you!

Volunteering Opportunities
Every day, seafarers arrive in Australian ports after weeks or months at sea, often far from family, friends and support networks.
Our volunteers are the friendly faces who provide a warm welcome, transport, practical assistance, and a listening ear.
Could you spare a few hours a week/month to make a real difference in the life of a visiting seafarer?
We are currently seeking volunteers across Australia.
Contact your local Mission to Seafarers centre or visit mts.org.au to learn more.
