π¨ If you see illegal fruit netting in use or being sold, the Conservation Regulator is encouraging that it be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. π¨
π There is still far too much of this illegal netting in use across the Macedon Ranges. Since 2021, fruit netting with mesh sizes greater than 5 x 5 mm has been prohibited for household use and the Conservation Regulator Victoria is now cracking down on its sale and use. (Note: these regulations do not currently apply to commercial growers such as vineyards and orchards.)
πΏ These nets cause serious harm to our native wildlife; birds, possums, bats, echidnas and even reptiles can become entangled and suffer painful injuries or death. Entanglement can occur not only when nets are covering trees, but also when stored loosely on the ground, where reptiles and small mammals can easily become trapped.
π Five Victorian councils; Brimbank, Manningham, Merri-bek, Yarra, and Boroondara are leading the way with a free fruit-net swap program for residents, partnering with UPPAREL to recycle collected netting. MRWN will be working with Macedon Ranges Shire Council to bring a similar initiative to our region.
π If you see entangled wildlife, call Wildlife Victoria on 03 8400 7300 for urgent assistance.
πΏ Small steps make a big difference.
