2026 SGGI Singles Championship held at Phillip Island Golf Club 15th May - thanks to Trish Owen for the following report.
it was yet another superb ‘Summer’ day at Phillip Island Golf Club for the running of the SGGI Women’s prestigious Singles Championship.
The course was in excellent condition, with very slick greens. Some players felt that the course staff could have been more generous with the hole size.
The overall South Gippsland Championship was won by Rebecca Brown, no stranger to this title, with 84.
The A Grade handicap event was won by Vicki Ramage from Phillip Island with 74 nett. Vicki also scored a spectacular eagle (her first ever), on the 16th - earning herself a memento for the occasion of a ball marker piece from the Phillip Island Pro shop.
All present were very pleased to see Irene Holm from Meeniyan win the B Grade stroke event with 96 off the stick, as well as take out the double with the B Grade handicap event with 96/20/76 nett. A very popular win.
The winner of the C Grade Championship stableford event was a ‘new to golf’ Phillip Island player finishing with 40 points. This was Mary Blackwood’s first major win.
Balls down the line went to 31 points: Megan Elbaz (Phillip Island), Andrea Thorson and Tanya Thorson (Meeniyan Golf Club), Wendy Gervasi (Mirboo North Golf Club), Ada Anglin and Alice Schofield (Phillip Island Golf Club), Marg Johnson (Wonthaggi Golf Club), Kylie Collins (Foster Golf Club) and Sheryl Smith (Phillip island Golf Club).
The nearest the pins were won by Kylie Collins (Foster GC) on the 5th, Vicki Ramage (Phillip Is GC) on the 10th, and Elly Berryman (Woorayl GC) had a day out winning both nearest the pins on the 7th and 17th.
The South Gippsland Golf Match Committee thanks Lesley Meadowcroft for her capable organisation of the event, both on the day and in the lead-up, while the captain and vice-captain were unavailable. Thanks also goes to Marilyn John for her assistance and to all those that helped with day at Phillip Island Golf Club.
Just three more events before we can all have a big, long rest for the ‘winter break’. Next week we have the Friendship Day at Wonthaggi followed by the LGC Ambrose Shield at Leongatha and then the Brian Twite Bowl also at Leongatha in June.
