FINALLY.... WE HAVE ARRIVED AT COMMUNITY CONSULTATION FOR 2 WINGROVE STREET ALPHINGTON

You may know this site as home to the Alphington Farmers Market, or the space between the Darebin Parklands and the Alphington Station. It is an incredible plot of 3.5 hectares with enormous potential.

Council has now reached a stage in the Masterplanning where it is seeking community’s
input. A critical moment to articulate a vision for this unique place.

Please share your thoughts, needs and aspirations via the survey below for 2 Wingrove by 14 September. It takes no more than 5 minutes.

“There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about”

We want to know your priorities for 2 Wingrove so we can shape a plan that best meets the community’s needs.

While things have been quiet on the social media front, we've been working away in the background on a strategy to work with Council and stakeholders so that the incredible creative ideas, momentum and community spirit of The Alphington Commons is not lost because of bureaucratic rigidity. Masterplanning (stage 1A) is scheduled to kick off in the new financial year, and we are hoping to propose a way that community engagement and placemaking can take place along side the required environmental and site testing. More to come.

Well designed public space can be the antidote to isolation. The Alphington Commons understands the need for social connection, of fostering lasting, meaningful social connection across generations. We are intentional in our design to ensure that this place prioritises social connection.

More than ever, safety must be a key design consideration. It is only when people feel safe in their community, can they fully participate.

This is important to Alphington Commons. We envisage a place where people can access public space, exercise, play, recreate - both day and night - and feel safe and secure in the environment.

By community, for community.

Place-making | a people-centred, collaborative and hands-on approach to transforming public spaces into meaningful community places.

The role of community is critical, not an afterthought or a body to be consulted at a later stage. Community MUST be a partner from the beginning. The best outcomes will come from valuing community, harnessing their creativity, resource, ambition and ability to navigate complexity.

The future of 2 Wingrove St, Alphington MUST involve community, from the outset.

Darebin Parklands is home to the Spiritual Healing Trail. This is a trail along the Darebin Creek, which is a gift from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community as a gesture of reconciliation. The aim of the trail is to strengthen social and emotional wellbeing, deepen connection to land, to others and to ourselves.

The Alphington Commons sees an incredible opportunity to build on this. We want to ensure the design and ongoing activation of this space will be co-designed and co-led by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community - to create a place of spiritual connection, truth telling and reconciliation, learning and a connection to Country.
