We love seeing the results of our volunteers' hard work come to life! 💚

It's a bit of a full-circle moment as OzFish and volunteers roll up their sleeves (and pants!) to install the fish hotels built at one of our events earlier this year.

These fish hotels will provide vital habitat for our fishy friends, creating places for them to shelter and thrive.

14 enthusiastic frog lovers joined expert David De Angelis for an evening discovering our local frogs!

Despite the chilly weather, we heard four different frog species calling, spotted a Whistling Tree Frog and found plenty of tadpoles! 🔦

A special shoutout to our two young citizen scientists, whose incredible knowledge and enthusiasm brought so much energy to the night! 💚

Our sightings were recorded for Melbourne Water's Frog Census and FrogID, contributing to our understanding of local frog populations.

A big thank you to David and everyone who joined us for such a lovely evening! 🌿

Patience, young Padawan… 👀

Platypus monitoring is as much about slowing down and noticing as it is about the sighting itself.

Over two mornings on Darebin Creek, our volunteers showed up knowing they might not spot a platypus - but hopeful that one might be out there. Instead, there were ducklings at the water’s edge, lorikeets overhead and time to become a little more familiar with the creek and its rhythms. 🌿

Sometimes connecting with nature isn’t about what you find, but taking the time to look.

We're excited to be joining passionate people and community organisations from across Melbourne for Confluence 2026: Community Waterways Forum!

This FREE event is all about celebrating, connecting and sharing ideas to better protect our rivers, creeks and wetlands.

🏔️ Hear from Uncle Andrew Gardiner, Wurundjeri Elder and Birrarung Council Chair who will Welcome us to Country and share his perspective on the Birrarung as a living cultural landscape.

🦜 Kirsty Costa, host of popular podcast "Weekend Birder" will explore how noticing birds can help us connect to and care for our waterways

🌊 Members of the Urban Waterways Alliance, including DCMC, will share insights on why collaboration is so important to advocate for change.

🐝 These sessions and more will be guided by our masterful MC Ben Cullen, from Finding Melbourne’s Nature.

But most importantly it’s an opportunity for the connection, ideas and conversations that will motivate and sustain the amazing people who are the champions of the rivers, creeks and wetlands across Melbourne.

Spot and learn about local bird species, explore the habitats they rely on, and help contribute to our annual bird surveys, with observations added to eBird. 🔭🌿

The parklands and surrounding areas may feel a bit like a busy and bustling metropolis to turtle hatchlings!🐢🏢🚕

It is totally normal to see turtles out of the pond this time of year, the adults are finding a place to nest, and hatchlings are finding their way back to the pond.

➡️ Please leave them to do their turtley wonderings, take extra care where you step, and as always, keep dogs on leash in the on-leash areas of the parklands.

Dog attacks are one of the leading causes of platypus deaths in Victoria. Even a dog’s
presence can disturb wildlife from important behaviours like feeding, resting and breeding.

Take the Lead and join the many Victorians protecting platypus:

Curious about frogs and the health of Darebin Creek? Join us at Beenak Reserve for a hands-on evening of frog monitoring training.

Learn how to identify local frog species, recognise and record their calls, and contribute to our seasonal monitoring program running from October to December.

You’ll also discover some of the incredible frogs that call the Darebin Creek Valley home - including the critically endangered Growling Grass Frog.
