Lions Club of Exeter

Lions Club of Exeter We meet to raise funds for local charities and create social events to which all are welcome Our motto is "We Serve".

There are more than 1.3 million members in over 200 countries, all serving their local communities and worldwide projects. In the UK we have 900 clubs with around 18,000 members. Each club is autonomous but works within international guidelines. The Lions believe that individuals working together can initiate and carry out projects that will make their community a better place. Most of the funds w

e raise are spent locally, but we also support International projects, such as the recent Lions International SightFirst campaign which raised over £150 million worldwide, to help combat preventable and reversible blindness throughout the world. Lions are often the first to make local grants in emergency situations such as the Indian Ocean tsunami and the Australian bush fires and more recently various flood disasters. These projects are managed by Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) to ensure wise and safe use of donations. Exeter Lions Club Member Completes Sponsored Cycle Ride in Support of Neonatal Unit
Exeter Lions Club is celebrating the achievement of member Gary Blackmore, who completed a sponsored bike ride to help raise funds for this year’s club project in support of the Neonatal Baby Unit at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.
The idea was first raised at a recent club meeting focused on fundraising for the project, when Gary volunteered to cycle from North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital — a journey of around 45 miles. What made the challenge even more remarkable was that Gary was not a regular cyclist and did not even own a bicycle when he made the commitment.
Gary has now completed the ride, tackling the route on one of the hottest days of the year. He was joined by his daughter and daughter-in-law, and together they completed the demanding journey to Exeter in an effort that Gary described as a real achievement.
So far, the sponsored ride has raised £555 for the neonatal unit, with the club proud of Gary’s determination and grateful for the support received. The fundraising effort reflects the community spirit of Exeter Lions Club and its ongoing commitment to supporting important local causes.

At the Exeter Lions Club’s 65th “Sapphire” Charter Anniversary at the Exeter Court Hotel on Saturday 9 May, Lion President Karina Wells presented a Melvin Jones Fellow award to Rachel Lyons in recognition of her outstanding service. Rachel has taken on many roles, including Welfare Chair and Minute Secretary. She also runs the “Medicine in a Bottle” scheme, collects used spectacles and newspapers for recycling, and knits trauma dolls for children in Ukraine. When time allows, she supports a local community shop and helps with other community projects—truly living our motto, “We Serve.”
