Announcing the Geocaching NSW Committee for 2026/2027.

Thank-you to our outgoing member Frits Coenen (Its_Dozzie) for his 5 years of service. We welcome Charmaine to the GCNSW Committee.

On Sunday 9th August, Geocaching NSW held its Annual General Meeting. We looked back at another successful year, with our Orange Expedition in March as the highlight of the year.

We had one change to the committee from 2025-2026, with Its_Dozzie (Frits Coenen) stepping down after 5 years. Geocaching NSW thanks him for all the work he has done over the years. At the same time, we welcome the cosmonaut97 (Charmaine Turnbull) to the committee for 2026-2027.

Traditionally, we announced the new GCNSW geocoin for 2026. This year it features Banjo Paterson.

Orange was the destination of this year’s expedition. Orange is also the birthplace of Banjo Paterson, one of Australia’s most beloved bush-poets and author. Clancy of the Overflow, The Man from Snowy River and Waltzing Matilda are some of his well-known titles.

The 2026 Geocaching NSW trackable geocoin is beautifully custom designed in the shape of the state of NSW with the association’s logo and mint year on one side and on the reverse, a scene from The Man from Snowy River, and a number of the titles of his most famous poems and short stories. Thank you to ziggiau and noisiepitttta for another great design.

With only 100 geocoins minted, these are sure to become a collector’s item. If you have any of the previous Geocaching NSW geocoins, you won’t want to miss out on this one. Buy one to travel and one to keep in your collection or send one as a gift to a geocaching friend.

The 2026 geocoin is now available in our online geocaching shop from the website, or at upcoming events for only $16 each. Please note that owing to a delay in production, the coin will not be available for distribution for about 4-6 weeks, but you can still put your orders in now.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Milburn (Grub Fred) died peacefully at home on 31st July. He was a stalwart of the geocaching community, particularly in the Hunter Valley and Mid-North Coast region.

There are so many people in the community who had the honour of meeting Grub Fred and sharing a laugh with him. He was well-known for his love of afternoon martinis, Hawaiian shirts, and his famous “Rogues Gallery” which contained photographs of the many geocachers he had met at events. His friendly smile and welcoming manner to everyone will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Leslea and the Milburn family. The funeral service will be held on Friday 7th August from 2:30 at the chapel at Pettigrew Funerals, located at 7 Murray Dwyer Circuit, Mayfield West.

Are you passionate about geocaching? Did you enjoy our events this year? We are looking for new committee members to help promote Geocaching NSW, be the geocaching voice when talking with NPWS and promote our favourite hobby by bringing the community together.

Get out your walking boots. The annual Winter Walk is happening on Sunday 28th June 2026.

Geocaching NSW would like to invite all geocachers to attend our 2026 Winter Walk at Minnamurra Rainforest in the Budderoo National Park. The event starts at 10:00am, and the walk will commence around 10:30am from the picnic area adjacent to the Visitors Centre. There is the option of doing the short walk along the Lyrebird Loop (around 45 minutes) or the longer Falls Walk (around 2 hours).

World GeoMay8 Day - 2026

One of the very best things about geocaching, is the great geo-mates you make along the way. We have all met so many wonderful people, both here and overseas, that we can call close mates.

Tomorrow, 8th May, is the unofficial World GeoMay8 Day, started by Calypso62, which has now spread all over the world.

Even a Google search recognises this:
The term "World GeoMay8 Day" refers to a geocaching event initiated by a user named Bruce (Calypso62) in Australia. 8 May 2026 is often celebrated as a dedicated day to connect with other "Geo-Pals" in the geocaching community.

Through his enthusiasm, Caypso62 has encouraged up to 50 geocachers from all over the world to host a "GeoMay8" event this year. There are 11 events hosted within Australia, so check out the list below to see where is one near you.

We hope to see you and your May8s at one of these events.

Thank you, Orange!

On behalf of the Geocaching NSW committee, members and other geocachers in the community, we would like to say how much we enjoyed visiting your region last weekend. Around 40 teams from all over the state (and elsewhere) turned up for the 2026 Orange Expedition and experienced wonderful hospitality.

The three events we hosted, along with one hosted by The ROOS, were well attended, and the adventures that people experienced over the weekend were thoroughly enjoyable. Along with the Orange Food Festival, parkrun and the Biosecurity Collections tour, there was an enormous community spirit, with so many options of what to do. We can't thank the locals enough for all the caches, both old and new, and the variety of cache types, that the visitors could enjoy.

See you at the next Expedition in 2027 (wherever that may be).
