Happy World Postcard Day!

Long before geocaching built an entire community, the mailbox was another way to discover the world and connect with others.

Geocaching and postcards both unite humans through shared experiences and turn ordinary places into meaningful destinations. Whether you sign a log sheet or a postcard, you’re connecting with someone through the joy of discovery.

Observed every year on 1st October, World Postcard Day celebrates the very first postcard, innovating the world forever. Since 2019, the day encourages people worldwide to write, mail, and exchange postcards to spread joy, connect with others, and celebrate the tradition of handwritten mail.

In these digital times of email and instagram, it is still nice to find a surprise postcard in your letterbox. The goal for the World Postcard Day is to bring that joy to as many people as possible. So grab some postcards and stamps, and make a plan to celebrate this special means of communication, on 1st October.

The mailbox isn’t the only place to find something special in October. Earn the World Postcard Day 2026 souvenir by:

Attending any event and posting an Attended log from 27th September to 4th October, 2026.
OR
Finding and logging one Letterbox Hybrid from 27th September to 4th October, 2026.

There seems to be an issue with getting the Activation Code for the new Geocaching NSW 2026 geocoin. An "error" message appears when you try the "Retrieve your Activation Code" section.

We have been informed that the Activation Code is "GCNSW2026". It should work if you try that. In the meantime, we will be contacting GCHQ to see if they can solve the issue.

For those of you who have already received your coins, we hope you enjoy them. If you asked them to be posted to you, they should arrive in the mail in the next week or so.

It was with much sadness that we learnt of the passing of Anne Gilmour after a long illness. Anne was part of the team "baby & Mrs gopher". Anne and Barry have been long-time supporters of Geocaching NSW and became early members (Anne was #21) when the association was formed in 2009. They are very popular in their local and the wider geocaching community. They have strongly promoted geocaching in the Wagga Wagga and Riverina regions, and most recently supported our Wagga Wagga Expedition in February 2024.

Our condolences go to Barry and the rest of the family. Anne will be sorely missed by her family and many friends.

The 2026 Geocaching NSW geocoins have finally arrived! Thanks for your patience.

If you ordered any from the website Shop since the AGM a few weeks ago, and requested them to be mailed to you, they will be processed and dispatched in the coming weeks.

If you opted to collect them at an event, then you can get them from Brewmaker at any Sydney events in the coming weeks. If you message directly, he can organise to hand them to you if you are attending any events.

You can still purchase them online or at future events. The cost is $16 each. You can pay by cash or card if purchasing at events.

Happy International Geocaching Day to everyone tomorrow, Saturday 15th August. We hope you can get out and about to find at least one cache or attend an event to collect the souvenir.

Thank-you to our outgoing member Frits Coenen (Its_Dozzie) for his 5 years of service. We welcome Charmaine to the GCNSW Committee.

On Sunday 9th August, Geocaching NSW held its Annual General Meeting. We looked back at another successful year, with our Orange Expedition in March as the highlight of the year.

We had one change to the committee from 2025-2026, with Its_Dozzie (Frits Coenen) stepping down after 5 years. Geocaching NSW thanks him for all the work he has done over the years. At the same time, we welcome the cosmonaut97 (Charmaine Turnbull) to the committee for 2026-2027.

Traditionally, we announced the new GCNSW geocoin for 2026. This year it features Banjo Paterson.

Orange was the destination of this year’s expedition. Orange is also the birthplace of Banjo Paterson, one of Australia’s most beloved bush-poets and author. Clancy of the Overflow, The Man from Snowy River and Waltzing Matilda are some of his well-known titles.

The 2026 Geocaching NSW trackable geocoin is beautifully custom designed in the shape of the state of NSW with the association’s logo and mint year on one side and on the reverse, a scene from The Man from Snowy River, and a number of the titles of his most famous poems and short stories. Thank you to ziggiau and noisiepitttta for another great design.

With only 100 geocoins minted, these are sure to become a collector’s item. If you have any of the previous Geocaching NSW geocoins, you won’t want to miss out on this one. Buy one to travel and one to keep in your collection or send one as a gift to a geocaching friend.

The 2026 geocoin is now available in our online geocaching shop from the website, or at upcoming events for only $16 each. Please note that owing to a delay in production, the coin will not be available for distribution for about 4-6 weeks, but you can still put your orders in now.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Milburn (Grub Fred) died peacefully at home on 31st July. He was a stalwart of the geocaching community, particularly in the Hunter Valley and Mid-North Coast region.

There are so many people in the community who had the honour of meeting Grub Fred and sharing a laugh with him. He was well-known for his love of afternoon martinis, Hawaiian shirts, and his famous “Rogues Gallery” which contained photographs of the many geocachers he had met at events. His friendly smile and welcoming manner to everyone will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Leslea and the Milburn family. The funeral service will be held on Friday 7th August from 2:30 at the chapel at Pettigrew Funerals, located at 7 Murray Dwyer Circuit, Mayfield West.
