The climate talks in Bonn kicked off today, and we're watching closely. Here's why you should too.
Türkiye and Australia are set to host COP31 in November, and at Bonn we’ll get an idea of what their joint presidency aims to achieve.
The task at hand: to produce a draft decision for a just transition mechanism; an orderly shift from a fossil-fuel dependant world to a greener one.
This decision will be sent for approval at COP31. The more discussion that takes place now, the more relevant this process becomes for real outcomes. This was put best by Flávia Bellaguarda, a COP30 advisor:
"We managed to get the elephant into the room. Now, it needs to stay there. For that, we need to give him plenty of food so he can’t fit through the door and leave.
We achieve that with dialogue, and creating space for genuine exchange."
This is the space for countries to decide what moves forward to COP31. It’s also where we can push leaders to align on solutions that matter to us.
Many organizations, including ours, have advocated for the just transition to provide decent jobs, public investment, and support for affected communities.
