Sorell Council has been advised of another planned and approved burn being undertaken by external fire management contractors at 300 Pittwater Road, Seven Mile Beach, which may affect residents in the Carlton, Lewisham and Dodges Ferry areas.

🕚 Commencing: 11.00pm
📍 Location: 300 Pittwater Road, Seven Mile Beach
💨 Potential impact: Smoke and smoke odour may be noticeable in surrounding areas depending on weather and wind conditions.

Please note:
⚠️ This burn is not being conducted by Sorell Council.
🌦️ The burn is weather dependent and may be cancelled if conditions are unsuitable.

We understand these burns can be an inconvenience for nearby residents and are expected to continue periodically throughout winter and spring, depending on weather conditions. We have been advised that each windrow burn is gradually moving further away from Lewisham, which means smoke impacts on nearby communities are expected to lessen over time.

Timely reminder not to use sand or dirt to try and extinguish fires. Soak it, stir, soak again and ensure there is no heat left to cause burns.

Nine-year-old Evie was doing what most kids love, exploring and playing outdoors.

While visiting her aunt’s property, Evie spotted what looked like a pile of sand. Thinking it was safe, she jumped straight in.

But it wasn’t sand! The day before, it had been a bonfire. The fire had been covered with sand to put it out, but underneath, it was still dangerously hot.

In an instant, Evie suffered a serious burn to her ankle.

Thankfully, Evie’s nan knew exactly what to do:
• Removed her shoes immediately
• Placed her burn under cool running water for 20 minutes

This quick action helped to reduce the severity of the burn before Evie was taken to a GP, who referred her to the RHH Burns Unit.

Evie’s injury was severe. She required skin graft surgery and will need to wear a pressure bandage for 1–2 years.

But the impact went beyond the physical injury.

Evie missed the rest of the school year, time with friends, and even her much-anticipated cheer presentation.

Mum Tara says it was a difficult time for the whole family.

“I am extremely grateful to my workplace for being so flexible. Balancing care, recovery, and everyday life was certainly a challenge. Evie is so resilient and brave, but we certainly weren’t prepared for how long and hard the recovery process was going to be.”

Today, Evie is back at school and enjoying cheer with her friends, but her recovery still has a way to go.

Never cover a fire with sand to extinguish it.

Instead:

➡️ Stir it
➡️ Soak it again

🔥 Always ensure fires are completely out and cool before leaving them.
🔥 Keep children well away from any recently extinguished fire area.
🔥 Never leave a fire unattended or smouldering overnight.

🔥 Reminder: Always supervise your burn-offs 🔥

Conditions across Tasmania remain dry, so it’s important to take extra care with any outdoor burning.

While Fire Permits are not currently required, people are encouraged to register burns in advance with Tasmania Fire Service by calling 1800 000 699.

Registering a burn will ensure your local brigade are aware of your plans should they need to respond, and you will prevent having a brigade turn up unnecessarily.

If you’re planning to burn:
• Always have an adult in attendance until the fire is completely extinguished
• Be prepared to manage the fire and monitor changing weather conditions
• Have suitable, working firefighting equipment on hand
• Never light fires in peat, humus or marram grass
• Let your neighbours know—smoke can impact health and farming operations (especially vineyards)

Before you leave any fire:
👉 Soak it.
👉 Stir it.
👉 Soak it again.

Also think carefully when lighting campfires or using machinery, and double check that recent fires (including fire pits) are fully out.

⚠️ Remember: Landowners are responsible for any damage caused by fires that escape their property.

Firefighters striving to contain a bushfire near Swansea today have deployed water bombing aircraft and earth moving equipment to support the efforts of hard-working crews on the ground.

While there is no current threat to the community from the McNeills Road bushfire, warnings remain in place due to available fuels.

Current warnings are:
• Bushfire Advice - McNeills Road, Swansea - Monitor conditions. Swansea and surrounding areas.
• Bushfire Smoke Alert - Dolphin Sands - Cambria Drive - Avoid smoke. Dolphin Sands and surrounding areas.

McNeills Road remains closed to the public.

Fire behaviour can change quickly and residents in the Swansea area should continue to monitor conditions by listening to ABC radio or visiting tasalert.com

Tasmania Fire Service Acting District Officer Brendan Plummer said more than 30 firefighters had worked hard to contain the fire within accessible areas today.

“Some areas to the west remain under active management … smoke and flames will remain visible from this fire, but there is no cause for concern at this stage,” he said.

“Aircraft are continuing water bombing operations on the Meredith River side, targeting active areas and supporting our ground crews.

“Specialist crews from Tasmania Fire Service and Sustainable Timber Tasmania are actively extinguishing flare-ups within established fire boundaries today.

“A second aircraft was deployed today to further support suppression efforts this afternoon.

“Additional heavy machinery, including a dozer, will be deployed tomorrow to strengthen control lines.”

The McNeills Road, Swansea fire, which started late Thursday and then increased in activity on Sunday due to changing weather conditions, has burnt about 1030 hectares.

There has been no impact to structures.

Acting District Officer Plummer said firefighters would conduct on-foot patrols in remote areas to assess conditions and ensure there were no remaining flareups beyond driveable tracks.

“Up to eight crews from the TFS East Coast District and STT will return to fireground on Tuesday,” he said.

“Aircraft will be staged overnight at Swansea and tasked early in the morning to continue suppression efforts.”

Tasmania Fire Service is continuing to respond to a bushfire near Swansea with about 30 firefighters returning to the fireground today.

Conditions this morning are favourable, supporting firefighting efforts at the bushfire on McNeills Road, Swansea.

👨‍🚒🔥Work is under way to strengthen and consolidate containment lines around the fire perimeter. This includes the use of aircraft and earthmoving machinery.

McNeills Road remains closed to the public.
