The proposed National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Amendment Bill 2026 (the Bill) includes the most significant changes to the scheme since its introduction.

Carers Australia is concerned carers will have little choice but to fill the gaps created by the proposed changes, while many are already depleted and exhausted.

In its submission to the consultation on the Bill, Carers Australia argues for an analysis of the impact on carers, better and longer consultations, and more targeted changes.

Carers Australia CEO Joanna Cave said:

“While we recognise the importance of securing the NDIS for future generations, and support reforms improving the integrity and sustainability of the scheme, not considering the impacts on carers risks implementing poor policies, undermining participant and carer outcomes and imposing higher costs on taxpayers in the long run.

“There are changes that could make the NDIS market work better, slow cost growth, deliver better value for taxpayers and have less impact on people with disability and their carers. Provider overcharging is a one example and a concern for many Australians. Evidence shows some NDIS providers set prices at or near price caps, contributing to cost blowouts.”

The Young Carer Bursary mid-year survey closes at 11:59pm AEST 8 June 2026.

If you have received the Young Carer Bursary this year, you need to complete the survey.

If you do not do the survey by this date, you will not receive the second Bursary payment of $1500.

Yesterday, carers from across Australia took their chance to tell MPs and Senators about the realities of combining paid work with caring responsibilities.

At Australia’s Parliament House, their conversations focused on the practical impacts policy decisions have on everyday life. How those decisions eventually land at carers kitchen tables, on Australians trying to balance work, care, finances and family responsibilities.

Carers shared both the barriers they face in participating in the workforce and the supports that make a meaningful difference, including flexible work arrangements, accessible services and policies that recognise the value of unpaid care.

With carers contributing more than $78 billion worth of unpaid care each year, these discussions are critical to shaping a workforce and economy that better supports carers to participate fully in paid employment, should they be able to do so.

Thank you to the carers who contributed their time, insights and lived experience to these important conversations.

Today we took carers to Australia’s Parliament House to tell their stories directly to MPs and Senators.

Six carers from across the country joined us to share the barriers and facilitators to being part of the paid workforce, while also having a caring role.

Their caring journeys as parents, siblings, daughters, sons and brothers while also being part of the country’s paid workforce are just a snapshot of the experiences of Australia’s carers.

Carers contributed $2 billion a week in unpaid care, we want to see more support and more flexible working so they can join the paid workforce too.
