YOUR MIND WANDERS.
THAT’S THE PRACTICE.

Meditation isn't about emptying your mind.

Your mind will wander. You'll remember something you need to do. Replay a conversation. Start planning dinner.

And then, perhaps, you'll notice.

That moment of noticing is the practice.

I'm Claire. I've been practising Tibetan Buddhism and meditation for more than 25 years. I'm a former corporate whizz, a mother, wife, co-founder of Lojong Meditation — and these days, I'm also living with Stage 4 cervical cancer.

Which has given me a fairly direct opportunity to find out whether all those years of mind training actually help when life gets difficult.

They do.

Not because meditation makes difficult things disappear. It doesn't. But it has taught me how to stay with what is happening without always being swept away by it; how to recognise what my mind is doing; and how to come back, again and again, to the life that's actually here.

That's really what Coming Home is about.

It's a small weekly meditation class in Daylesford where I share practical meditation and Tibetan Buddhist mind-training practices that I've found genuinely useful in ordinary — and sometimes decidedly unordinary — life.

You don't need to be Buddhist.
You don't need to have meditated before.
And you definitely don't need to be good at stopping your thoughts.

We meditate. We notice what happens. We talk about it. And afterwards, we have tea.

This Thursday we'll continue exploring calm abiding and insight meditation — learning to steady the mind, and then becoming curious about what we find when we look.

**Your mind wandered. Good. 🌿**

One of the things I hear most often from people learning to meditate is:

*“I’m terrible at it. I just keep thinking.”*

But thinking isn't the problem.

This Thursday at Coming Home, we're returning to **Shamatha, or calm abiding** — one of the foundational practices of Buddhist meditation.

Shamatha teaches us that meditation isn't about somehow forcing the mind into silence.

We place our attention.

The mind wanders.

We notice.

**And we return.**

Again and again.

Over time, we become more familiar with our minds as they actually are — busy, sleepy, restless, peaceful, distracted, sometimes beautifully still.

Because mind training isn't about working with the mind we wish we had.

**It's learning to work with what is.**

This week we'll explore distraction, dullness and attention, before settling into a longer period of quiet meditation together.

No previous meditation experience is needed — and you definitely don't need to be able to “stop thinking”. ❤️

This week at Coming Home, we’ll gather for our monthly dedication practice — an evening centred around compassion, connection and turning our practice towards others.

I’ll introduce Tonglen, a beautiful Tibetan Buddhist meditation for cultivating compassion, before we dedicate the merit of our practice to the wellbeing of everyone on our community dedication list.

We’ll close together in dedication, accompanied by a recording of Tamkey’s Tibetan chanting. 🙏🏻

Thursday 5.30–6.30pm

No meditation or Buddhist experience needed. Chairs and cushions are available — simply come as you are.

Three places remain.

🪷 Community Dedication List🪷
Once a month at Coming Home at the Daylesford Apothecary, we dedicate our meditation practice to people in our wider community who may be going through a difficult time — illness, grief, loss, uncertainty, or simply a period when a little extra kindness feels needed.

You don't need to attend the meditation class to add someone. There is no cost, and you don't need to be Buddhist or follow any particular tradition.

If there is someone you'd like us to hold in our practice this Thursday, you're warmly invited to add their name to our dedication list:

🪷 A few places remain for Coming Home tomorrow evening.🪷
This week we'll explore a gentle blue lotus visualisation, inspired by Thích Nhất Hạnh's teaching:
"No mud, no lotus."

We'll spend an hour slowing down, training the mind to settle, and reflecting on how even the difficult parts of life can become the gentle ground for growth and transformation.

Whether you're completely new to meditation or have been practising for years, you're warmly welcome.

Time to get into the way-back machine…

Imagine it’s 1998. You’re with your best friend, Venerable Tsondu, heading off on summer vacay to Gyuto Monastery to celebrate the opening of a new hall with friends from Kirti Monastery.

It’s hot. It’s India. And for once, there’s a little downtime with friends. ❤️

Lojong co-founder Tamkey Tsaruma on the right, and Ven. Tsondu on the left — young monks, old friends, and a whole lifetime still ahead of them.

So lovely to be able to share these glimpses into the past. 🥰🪷🙏🏻

Where were you, and what were you doing, in 1998?

If we’re all carrying worries that no one else can fully see…
How could we not meet one another with kindness?

Meditation isn’t about escaping the world or discovering something mystical hidden away inside us. It’s about training the mind to notice what has always been true.

To see our similarities before our differences.

Discover the transformative power of meditation and interdependence, realising we're all connected through each borrowed breath.
