COMMAND TEAM UNIT VISIT - BUNBURY & BUSSELTON

It was a night of VIPs on the 17th of June. The Commander of the AAC, BRIG David McCammon, AM, DSM, bar, WA AAC COMD COL Natalie Wigg, WA AAC RSM WO1 Mark Wilkinson, WA AAC ACOMD LTCOL(AAC) Angela Hales, 53 BN COMD MAJ(AAC) Jarrod Hales, WA AAC RCUO Lincoln Godwin, and 53 BN RSM CDTWO1 Manaia Murphy, all travelled down to 515 & 511 ACU Bunbury & Busselton to get an insight and understanding of how these units operate.

It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our units efficiency, strengths, and capabilities, while sharing stories and experiences about our recent campaign in Katanning with Exercise Invicti Simul. Cadets had the chance to ask questions and get to know the functions of the WA leadership team, while also learning the Australian Defence Force core values of Service, Courage, Respect, Integrity, and Excellence. Cadets also had the amazing opportunity to see the brand new AAC Stable Belt, which will be slowly distributed to cadets over the next 3 years.

The visit was also a special occasion to celebrate individual achievements within our ranks with awards presented to CUO Matthew Lindberg for his outstanding effort at the RSM-A drill competition as a piper in the national band, and bronze commendations presented to CAPT(AAC) Mitchell Cassin and LT(AAC) Helen Castafaro for their ongoing effort and exceptional commitment to the AAC.

ANZAC Day 2026

Today, cadets from 511 Army Cadet Unit - Busselton and 515 Army Cadet Unit Bunbury proudly took part in this year’s ANZAC Day commemorations across the South West.

Our cadets supported services at the Bunbury Dawn Service, Bunbury Morning Service, Busselton Morning Service, and Dardanup Morning Service. Across these locations, they fulfilled key ceremonial roles including Catafalque Parties, Flag Orderlies, and Flag Bearers, demonstrating exceptional discipline, respect, and professionalism.

A wreath was also laid at each of the morning services, honouring the service and sacrifice of those who have served our nation.

This is an incredibly important day in the calendar of the defence force, and the opportunity to be involved so heavily across the region is an honour that never ceases to lose its meaning. Thank you to the Bunbury RSL Sub-Branch, Busselton RSL Sub-Branch, and Shire of Dardanup for allowing us the privilege of honouring our service men and women, both former and current.

We are exceptionally proud of the way our cadets conducted themselves on such an important day of remembrance.

Lest we forget.

!!RSM-A DRILL COMPETITION SUCCESS!!

WA is heading home after a successful campaign over in Canberra for the RSM-A Drill Competition. The entire WA team performed extraordinarily well this year, with each of our cadets bringing home a silver RSM-A Medal for an excellent performance standard.

Additionally, we also took home silver commendations for our BDE RSM's Pace Stick Competition, and for our RCUO Sword Drill Competition.

We had plenty of skin in the game this year from Bunbury. Three members of our unit were fortunate enough to be selected to take part in the competition, with us also supporting in the band and in the activity coordination team! A massive congratulations is in order for the hard work and dedication of the below:

WA RSM-A Drill Competition team
- CDTSGT Joey Platts
- CDTSGT Samuel Williams
- CDT Madeline Williams

51ACU Pipes and Drums team
- CUO Matthew Lindberg

RCUO Mentor
- RCUO Lincoln Godwin (even though he's in brigade HQ, he's a Bunbury cadet through and through)

Competition Safety Officer
- CAPT(AAC) Mitch Cassin

Next up: The Deputy Chief of Army's Adventure Training Award, where our very own CDTCPL Michael Breese is competing to bring home a torch and boomerang later this month!

Very exciting to see our newly appointed SCLG for 53 Battalion.

We have a lot to celebrate at the local level, with CDTWO1 Manaia Murphy promoted into the Battalion RSM position, and RCUO Lincoln Godwin promoted to RCUO.

CDTWO1 Murphy has held positions in both 515 ACU as our Company Sergeant Major & 511 ACU in a support role, and I have no doubt that the hard work he has put in, and the tremendous experience that he has gained at our two units will guide him into a highly successful time as the Battalion RSM this year.

Our previous Battalion CUO, RCUO Godwin has also taken up a new role as our Western Australia Brigade Regional CUO. Originally hailing from 515 ACU Bunbury, this is a tremendous acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication he has put in over his cadet career, to be promoted into the highest position on offer in the state!

A massive congratulations is in order for both CDTWO1 Murphy and RCUO Godwin, along with CUO Gales and CUO Casotti for their new appointments in the 53 Battalion team for 2026.

We are thoroughly looking forward to working with you all in your new appointments this year, and wish you every success as you navigate the challenges that are before you!
