THE STAND โ€“ Two Weeks to Go

Over 60 businesses and organisations have taken THE STAND since 7 August โ€” an incredible show of leadership and commitment. ๐Ÿ’›

With just two weeks left in our 90-day campaign, weโ€™re asking for one more big push to help us reach our goal.

We have 60 โ€” and we know we can get to 90.
Just like we believe we can end family violence, we believe in our communities and their capacity to act.

Already, hundreds of actions that werenโ€™t even considered two and a half months ago are being undertaken. This is what community-led change looks like across the NT. ๐ŸŒ

Please:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Share our posts on your social channels
๐Ÿ‘‰ Create your own messages
๐Ÿ‘‰ Use your networks to ask others to take THE STAND

Together, we can reach 90 โ€” and build a Territory free from violence.

Destroyers, today with sadness we bring you news of women allegedly killed in what should be the safety of their own homes. Two families and communities of friends are left grieving. Investigations are ongoing, but we bring you what detail we can and commit to updating our record as verifiable facts emerge.

Our Counting Dead Women campaign calls on all levels of government to prioritise a national, unified system for investigation, analysis and response to violence against women, to make a safer world for women and their children. In support of this aim we continue our task of maintaining the most credible and substantiated record of women killed by violence in Australia.
Once more we sadly update our register of known deaths due to violence against women in 2025, which now stands at 28.

At about 7.50am on Sunday (10th August) police were called to a home in Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria, following reports of a woman dead. On entering the home, attending officers located the body of Zoe Walker (38). Her partner, Daniel Horanyi (46), was arrested at the property and has been charged with murder. Nothing further is reported to date.

At about 9:55pm yesterday (11th August) police were called to a home in Mount Waverley, Victoria, where they found the bodies of Athena Georgopoulos (39) and her partner Andrew Gunn (50). Ms Georgopoulos was 5 months pregnant. Ross Judd (34), believed known to the victims, was arrested at about 1:40am this morning at Westall Railway Station. He has been charged with 2 counts of murder. No other details are available at present.

We extend our deepest sympathy to family and friends of the victims.

Destroyers, these posts honour the memory of women who have died in tragic circumstances. We moderate closely and hide off topic comments. Off topic comments include: speculation as to motivation, actions, background, mental state and drug or alcohol use of the alleged perpetrator; calls for violent retribution; offensive remarks to other posters; and any comment which may impact on court proceedings.

Women from all backgrounds are counted but we make no assumptions about a woman's culture, lifestyle or circumstances. We often do not even know a name: this may be out of respect for cultural traditions or because of a court order. We add updated information to our annual registers as soon as it is received and verified.

You can access our updated current register and our historical registers on our dedicated page: https://tinyurl.com/y6ew3a8f

We maintain a separate register of โ€˜Undeterminedโ€™ deaths which we continue to monitor until a verifiable outcome is known. For reasons of privacy and legal responsibility this register is not made public. We are currently monitoring several deaths, some of which date back over months and years. We try to be accurate in our record, and we will not publish without a high degree of certainty, but we can't know the full circumstances of each death until court cases or coronial hearings are finalised. We do our best to maintain a full and accurate register, based on our recording criteria. If you know of any verified facts which may add detail to our record, please send us a **personal message**.

*Please note:* In at least 75 per cent of the cases reported from 2012 to 2023, the victim knew her alleged killer. We do not record only deaths attributed as domestic or family violence, as we believe all violent deaths targeted against women are the result of societal misogyny. We include women killed by other women (lateral violence). Their small but sad number confirms that most violence against women is perpetrated by men.

Katie Woolf - Thank you so much for having me on your show this morning to talk about our UNAA-NT International Womenโ€™s Day lunch this Saturday 8 March 2025 and your continued support for our event and our association. It is greatly appreciated.

It was wonderful to hear about the fantastic women that were nominated by community members for the 2 double passes to the lunch. Look forward to meeting them on Saturday.
