Rainbow Bridge Social Club

Rainbow Bridge Social Club We are a fun and inclusive social club for LGBTQIA+ identifying adults with intellectual disabilities

From the age of about 12 Charitha showed an interest in boys rather than girls. When he went to shopping centres with his sisters he would look at posters of models in shops and say, “ He’s very dashing” and never mention the girl models. As he got to about 15 he would say that he wanted a boyfriend and so it has continued; when we explained what being gay meant he then said that he was gay. So we

decided as a family to support him because we love him and want him to be happy, and about three years ago we started to look around and contact various organisations that were specifically for LGBTQI young people and didn’t find any in New South Wales for young people with intellectual disabilities. The Rainbow Bridge Social Club aims to fill the gap and provide support and a safe meeting place for young people aged 16-26 with an intellectual disability who identify as being LGBTQI or who are still exploring their sexual orientation. We will be having a launch party on the 14th of February 2016 and aim to have regular social gatherings throughout the year. To find out more please email Charitha and Mary at [email protected]
