Did you know?

The number of women in NSW prisons has more than doubled in the past decade, yet rehabilitation programs have not kept pace. This gap raises serious concerns about support, reintegration, and long-term outcomes for women in the criminal justice system.

At Women's Justice Network, we want to help break cycles of incarceration. We do this by advocating for progress on the inequalities that exist for criminalised women by addressing the policies and practices that sustain these injustices.

Change begins with awareness and action.

Around 60% of women in prison are mothers.

Behind every woman represented by the statistic is a family of children waiting, connections strained, and futures uncertain. When we support a woman, we don’t just support one person.

We support the people who rely on her too.

Support can take many forms: donating, sharing, engaging with posts, or simply taking a moment to learn more.

Awareness is where change begins.

21.2 times.

This is how much more likely Indigenous women in Australia are to be imprisoned compared to non-Indigenous women. This statistic highlights deeper systemic issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

At Women's Justice Network, we advocate for fairer systems and stronger community support.

Change begins with awareness and action.

"It was very degrading and humiliating. I felt like I was being violated and exploited. I felt quite disgusting, but I felt I had no choice.”

Unfortunately, Sara was not the only one. An analysis conducted by the Human Rights Law Centre found that just 0.58% of strip searches in Australian prisons resulted in the detection of contraband. Women and children — particularly First Nations people — are among the most vulnerable to this invasive practice. This article follows Sara, and many others like her, in their fight to ban strip searches.
