We’ve had a busy morning out at the Reenactment in our beautiful Thowgla Valley, where we catered to hundreds of people with our bbq, serving egg and bacon rolls and burgers and sausages.

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers and committee who had a very early start and who work tirelessly through the festival. We’ve been doing the bbq out at the reenactment for several years now, and this was our biggest yet.

Good morning Thowgla Residents,

We have been informed that the top end of the valley has been advised by local police to leave the area this week due to the heat and bushfire threat, their main concern is communication and black spots in the valley.

The hall committee will open up the hall this morning for those who wish to spend the day there, use the kitchen, internet, radios and showers.
We kindly ask that you clean up after yourself and respect the facilities.
There is to be no camping or staying at the hall overnight.

It is important to note that the Thowgla Hall is not an evacuation centre or a place of last resort, these are set by the Incident Controller.
If you need a place to stay overnight you must head to the evacuation centre in Wodonga or stay with friends and family. No one will be defending the hall in an emergency situation and therefore you must leave if told to evacuate.

During the last power outage the hall's generator was overloaded and has been sent for repairs, if we lose power again it is unlikely the hall will have backup power, but fingers crossed we get the generator back this week. If this is the case, please do not turn on air conditioning units, lights and fans all at the same time, you may use the air conditioner in the kitchen only on a low setting.

Many thanks and stay safe,
Thowgla Hall Committee.

For those in Thowgla Valley, or any other areas which have not yet had power restored, you could be eligible for compensation through the Prolonged Power Outage Payment.

This will significantly help with the ongoing burden of having no power and buying and running generators/pumps etc.

As it has now been 7 days, you should be able to apply for the first payment ($2380). This payment is available for each cumulative period of 7 days, up to a maximum of 21 days.

If you think you are eligible, you can check here:

http://www.ausnet.com.au/PPOP

Or you can call the Bushfire Support Line on 1300 561 171

There will also be physical help outside the IGA in Corryong.

To be eligible for the Prolonged Power Outage Payment, customers must:

have a residential electricity account with a national meter identification number (NMI) within the AusNet electricity distribution network
be electricity account holder of a property that:

lost power due to the severe weather events in Victoria between 7 January and 10 January 2026 and was without power for 7 cumulative days

not have already received a Prolonged Power Outage Payment for the same electricity account

have applied via AusNet’s online form, no later than 11.59 pm (AEDT) on 31 March 2026.

The Victorian and Australian Governments are providing financial relief to households that have been without power for seven cumulative days as a result of the January 2026 bushfires and heatwave.

After the last bushfires, our hall was lucky enough to receive many grants which allowed us to renovate, build a shower block, and add solar/battery and community wifi.

In this current bushfire situation, although much of Corryong and surrounds were evacuated, we know that many residents on rural blocks stay to defend.

Electricity has been restored to the town of Corryong but unfortunately that does not include Thowgla Valley, and probably wont for sometime.

We would therefore like to offer our hall to our residents without power, to come and grab a shower today, use the kitchen or use the wifi if needed (we just ask you to clean up afterwards please). Although mobile reception has been restored, big parts of our valley don’t receive mobile reception even on a good day.

The battery power has been turned on for today, so come and grab a shower if you need to, or make yourself a cup of coffee.

Unfortunately our power can’t stay on all the time as the batteries drain, so will be turned off later this evening, but please do contact me if you need to come and use it again, and we will happily organise that for you.

Although we’ve had some good conditions the last couple of days, we know that the danger still persists, and how draining this is on everyone. Wishing you all the best over the coming days and weeks.

If you know someone in Thowgla Valley who might need to come to our hall, but might not have access to Facebook, please do let them know.
