🎉Celebration of Recovery Community Event🎉

🎉Celebration of Recovery Community Event🎉

After three and a half years, the funding to support the Hub’s operations will now cease on June 30th 2024 and the Upper Murray Recovery Hub will close.

The Upper Murray Recovery Hub at the former Junior School Campus in Corryong has played a significant role in response to the recovery and the building of community resilience after the Black Summer Bushfire event of late 2019 and early 2020.

The Recovery Hub housed many key government and community agencies in the immediate aftermath of the fire event, co-ordinating responses, service needs, and place for community members to gather and be supported. Since the initial response period, the Hub has been the place where ongoing specific services have been provided ie counselling, financial advice, employment and business development, and community organisation meetings. A range of community development and resilience programs, projects, workshops, and events have been co-ordinated from the Hub by the Council Recovery team through the financial support of the state government.

The work of the Recovery team and the eleven Community Recovery Committees in the district, demonstrates that the community resilience is strong, and various community organisations and community leaders have ensured that the Upper Murray communities are well connected and resourced to support each other.

To celebrate the resilience and strength of the Upper Murray community, we will be holding a special Celebration of Recovery Community Event. This will be an opportunity for the community, and all the stakeholders associated with the Recovery effort to come together to mark the achievements of the community.

The future of the actual Recovery Hub building is being considered by Council in conjunction with the Department of Education. There are a number of options being assessed and the community will be advised as any details are developed to a point that can provide some certainty and clarity. It is important to note that any option being considered will focus on community access and services as articulated in a number of community consultations relating to the site. Any ongoing Recovery actions will be managed by Council’s Emergency Management unit as part of its normal business operations.

This month the North East CMA and Victorian Fisheries Authority were working with the Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research in the Upper Murray area on the Cudgewa, Nariel and Thougla Creeks to finalise fish surveys around the impacts of the 2020 bushfires.
While the final results are not in yet, we can say the fish are coming back into these systems, showing just how resilient our waterways can be, even after such terrible events.
The ARI have been Electro fishing via boat and also via backpacks, along with setting Fyke nets overnight as a means of capturing fish in the area for the survey.
The team has seen Murray Cod, Blackfish, Australian Smelt, Platypus, Spiny Crayfish and Carp (thankfully not too many of these!). It was exciting to once again find a good number of fingerling Murray Cod, Brown and Rainbow Trout (from last year’s spawning), showing these resilient fish are breeding naturally in these fire-affected systems.
