🐴 Are You on the Correct Canter Lead? 🐴

Getting the correct canter lead is essential for your horse’s balance, especially when turning or working in an arena. But how do you check, and why does it matter?

✅ What is the correct canter lead?
In canter, the horse moves in a three-beat rhythm. The correct lead means that the inside front leg is reaching forward more than the outside front leg. This helps the horse stay balanced, particularly on turns and circles.

👀 How to check?
While cantering, take a quick glance down at your horse’s shoulders. If the inside front leg is leading, you're on the correct lead. If the outside leg is leading, you're on the wrong lead and may need to correct it.

🔄 How to fix an incorrect lead?
If you pick up the wrong lead, bring the horse back to a trot and ask again. To encourage the correct lead:
➡️ Use your inside leg at the girth for impulsion.
➡️ Outside leg slightly behind the girth to encourage the correct hind leg to start the canter.
➡️ Shift your weight slightly to the inside to help cue the correct lead.

✨ Why does it matter?
Riding on the wrong lead makes turning more difficult for your horse and can cause imbalance or discomfort. Practicing correct canter leads helps develop even muscle strength and improves overall rideability.

📌 Tip: If you’re struggling with leads, try practicing on a circle or using a pole on the ground to help your horse strike off correctly.

Happy riding! 🐎💨

🐴 Are You on the Correct Diagonal 🐴

Riding on the correct diagonal helps your horse stay balanced and work evenly, especially when turning. But what does that mean, and how do you check?

✅ What is the correct diagonal?
When rising to the trot, you should rise as the horse’s outside front leg moves forward and sit when it moves back. This ensures you're in sync with the horse’s movement, supporting their balance and even muscle development.

👀 How to check?
Glance down at the horse’s shoulders. If you're rising as the outside front leg steps forward, you’re on the correct diagonal! If not, don’t worry—it's easy to fix.

🔄 How to change your diagonal?
If you realize you're on the wrong diagonal, simply sit for one extra beat of the trot, then continue rising. This quick adjustment will put you back in rhythm with your horse’s movement.

✨ Why does it matter?
Riding on the correct diagonal is especially important when riding circles or turns, as it helps your horse stay balanced and avoid unnecessary strain. Switching diagonals regularly when riding straight lines also helps work both sides of the horse evenly.

📌 Practice makes perfect! Next time you ride, take a moment to check your diagonal and feel the difference in your horse’s movement.

Happy riding! 🐎💨
