Mudgee Amnesty Action Group

Mudgee Amnesty Action Group The Mudgee Amnesty Action Group works in the local and surrounding area to promote human rights throughout the world. Who are we? (Message us for venue details.)

The group formed in January 2015 soon after the announcement by the Indonesian government that the two Australians, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were soon to be executed. We decided to campaign locally against the death penalty, and to work together on other human rights issues in both Australia and overseas. We are ordinary Australians who feel strongly that as a group we can help to defend t

hose who are denied justice or freedom. We want to draw attention to the abuses of human rights that take place in our own country and elsewhere. We are part of a ten-million strong global movement of people seeking to ensure justice to those whose human rights have been denied. What kind of events have we held? Vigils and letter-writing campaigns for the two Australians facing ex*****on in Indonesia

Market stall to highlight the issue of children in immigration detention

Film nights highlighting issues of refugees and Indigenous youth

A barbecue to bring together agencies involved in supporting young Indigenous people

An information stall at NAIDOC Family Fun Day

One-on- one engagement training sessions for members and supporters

What are our main campaigns? Supporting the rights of asylum seekers: Seeking a commitment from the government that people who seek asylum in Australia are treated humanely and have their claims assessed in a timely, fair and efficient manner

Community is Everything: Asking the government to address the over-representation of Indigenous children and young people in our criminal justice system

When do we meet? Our group meets on the second Wednesday of each month, starting at 5.30 pm. Meetings last for about an hour. All are welcome to join our informal meetings and/or participate in any of our events.

Sai Zaw Thaike is serving a 20-year prison sentence with hard labour for reporting on the aftermath of a cyclone in Myanmar. Photojournalist Sai Zaw should be able to report freely. He should be at home, doing the things he loves like watching Manchester United and caring for his cats. Instead, he is locked up, enduring beatings and periods of solitary confinement.

Take action on World Human Rights Day, tomorrow, 10th December at 10 am.
In Mudgee we'll be joining the walk to mark the end of "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence"
Grab your orange t-shirt and meet us at 119 Church Street. We're walking to the clock tower and back to the Barnardos office for morning tea.
Did you know?
Our Central West region of NSW currently records triple the state rate of incidents of coercive control recorded by NSW Police.
Mark H***e, Barnardos Australia Program manager for this region states that “The data shows that children in regional and rural areas are trapped in a perfect storm: higher rates of coercive control, limited access to support services and greater social isolation.”
“When we see areas like Far West NSW recording three times the number of incidents as Sydney, it’s clear that thousands of children are growing up watching their mothers being systematically controlled and intimidated with nowhere to turn to for help.”
Let’s show our community that we want gender-based violence and intimidation to stop.
Scan the QR code on the flyer below to indicate your intention to join the walk.

YOUR LETTERS CAN HELP CHANGE SOMEONE'S LIFE
We're getting together next Saturday to join Amnesty International’s global Write for Rights campaign. Our letters help to free people from prison, rescue others from death row and protect environmental defenders.
OUR LETTERS DO HELP
Cameroonian woman, Dorgelesse Nguessan, was imprisoned because she protested about the state of her country’s economy and the impact on its citizens. When she was charged with “insurrection, assembly, meetings and public demonstrations” and sentenced to five years in prison, Amnesty supporters stepped up and called repeatedly for her release. She was reunited with her family earlier this year.

“You reached out to us at the point when we most needed it.” Dorgelesse Nguessan

LETTERS DO HELP!
In 2023, Rocky Myers was on death row for a murder there's little evidence he committed. 30,000 Australians helped to persuade the governor of Alabama to commute Rocky's sentence.

Thank you to Janet for organising the Palestine peace rally in Kandos on Sunday. There is still a long way to go before we can call the situation in Gaza peaceful, but we have been part of the national call to our government to increase pressure on Israel.
We want to see a total lifting of the blockade, with full restoration of aid deliveries to all areas, including food, water, fuel, medical supplies and building materials.

HERE'S TWO LOCAL HUMAN RIGHTS EVENTS ON SATURDAY, 20TH

Drop in to our Indigenous Rights stall in Robertson Park in Mudgee tomorrow anytime from 8.30 until midday. You can find out about how we can keep kids away from the clutches of the justice system and sign our petitions to:
• Call on the Queensland and Northern Territory governments to stop locking up kids as young as ten, and in the NT, using spit hoods (which have been declared a form of torture by the UN). We're asking those governments to support Indigenous initiated and led efforts to strengthen family and community ties. (Did you know that research in British Columbia shows that Indigenous people who regularly speak their own language have lower rates of su***de?)
• Call on the federal government to distribute the $81.5m which they budgeted for justice reinvestment, ie diverting funds away from prisons and into Indigenous initiated and led programs which have already demonstrated effectiveness in keeping young people out of prison.
You can also find out about our other campaigns and pick up some free gear.
2. Take in the fascinating film called Israelism. It's being screened at 4 pm in Rylstone by the recently formed local group calling for peace in Palestine. (flyer attached)
The details:
