On this day 10 years ago, John Youings lined up to compete at a VJSBA race meeting at 75 years of age.
Now, we're not saying John was the oldest stand-up jet ski racer in the world at the time... but we're struggling to think of anyone older! If there was someone, we'd love to meet them.
What made the day special wasn't just that John got out there and raced. He turned up with his own ski, had a great time catching up with everyone, shared plenty of stories and laughs, and most importantly, got out on the water and gave it a crack. That's what our sport is all about.
Many members will remember John as a former President/Commodore of the VJSBA, roles in which he served the club for over a decade. Even in more recent years, John remained a familiar face around the pits and shoreline, regularly attending events as a supportive spectator and continuing to show his passion for the sport.
John's involvement with the VJSBA spans generations, and his enthusiasm for jet skiing never faded. Looking back 10 years on, it's a great reminder that age is just a number when it comes to getting out on the water and enjoying the sport you love.
Well done, John RIP 🙏
