Friends of Casterton to Branxholme Rail Trail

Friends of Casterton to Branxholme Rail Trail Initially it will focus on the 4km Sandford to Casterton & 20km Merino to Sandford sections.

To establish a 54km trail from Casterton to Branxholme featuring the Wannon River Bridge, the longest 19th-century Victorian Railway timber bridge still standing.

As the busy summer season for tourists comes to a close Council, together with community and local industry stakeholders, have been working on a refreshed vision for tourism in the Glenelg Shire.

Wow-ee! A new report into cycling in Australia has revealed that trips that included rail trail cycling accounted for 1.1 million trips and $862 million in spending in 2024.

As per the Draft Feasibility Study…
“The Trail experience will be delivered by Local Government with State and Federal Government contribution through funding, as well as land access agreements for the rail corridor and State Government roads. Local Government will take the leadership role in project management, implementation, marketing and ongoing maintenance with community support.”

I am meeting with other Southwest rail trail groups this week to see how we can draw from their experience. But the onus on getting the trail from draft feasibility study into production rests firstly with Glenelg Shire Council and our community support.
