CAN Community Support is proud to be an inaugural recipient of rescued food "waste" through the Melbourne Food Network. We are working together with Queen Victoria Market and City of Melbourne to redistribute unused fresh produce to local residents doing it tough in Carlton. Thank you to all involved in this wonderful project to ensure there is enough for all.

📢ARTIST PROFILE: Thursday's Children

Thursday’s Children Community Choir meets to sing at Church of All Nations, Carlton.

They have been together for many years and they have taken their songs to various parts of Victoria, to the Garlic Festival in Meeniyan, to Bendigo, and Daylesford and beyond, to Timor Leste where they have toured twice. Across the last twenty years, the choir has raised more than $20,000 for music projects in Timor Leste, and has made strong friendships with commuities and musicians there.

The choir's most recent excursion was singing last year at CresFest, a new Festival in Central Victoria, where they braved cold and wind and a little bit of rain to win enthusiastic audiences for their singing.

New singers interested in a culturally diverse repertoire are welcome.

📢ARTIST PROFILE: Gorani

Gorani is a group of nine Australian men who sing traditional songs from Georgia, to the East and Bulgaria, to the West of the Black Sea.

Songs include love songs, wedding songs, horse riding songs, church songs and even a song about the harsh life of a pair of bullocks and their driver.

They have appeared on national radio and TV in Georgia, Bulgaria and Australia.

The group started in 1992 following a workshop on Bulgarian men's village songs presented by the Boite and led by Bagryana Popov.

Celebrated Georgian ethnomusicologist Joseph Jordania joined the group in 1996 and sang with them for 15 years, steering their repertoire towards the diverse and dissonant sounds of Georgian polyphony.

Gorani has performed for The Boite, including memorable concerts at Hamer Hall, the Melbourne Town Hall, Collingwood Town Hall and Abbotsford Convent, for the National Folk Festival in Canberra, the Yakandandah Folk Festival and the Gertrude Street Projection Festival. This year they have performed at the Cygnet Folk Festival in Tasmania, Cresfest in Central Victoria, a fundraising concert for the Church of All Nations in Carlton and have presented in Warnambool a Georgian inspired Supra, a feast with impassioned toasting and singing. Gorani has performed at all but one International Symposium on Traditional Polyphony at the State Conservatoire, Tbilisi, Georgia which have been held biennially since 2002. The group has produced two CDs and is in the midst of a recording project.

With Robert Hillman on guitar and vocals, and classically trained vocalist Hannah Pelka-Caven, their stunning vocals, storytelling and sublime harmonies will transport you.

Formed over 10 years ago, and having lived and breathed traditional songs in Dublin, Glasgow and Belfast, the Raglins have toured and performed at almost every folk festival in the country, including Woodford Folk Festival, the National Folk Festival, Fairbridge Folk Festival, the National Celtic Festival, Cygnet Folk Festival and Illawarra Folk Festival, amongst others.

📣ARTIST PROFILE: Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir

MMGC is a choir with spirit and soul! They sing a wide range of gospel and soul music, from early spirituals like Steal Away, the golden era of the gospel quartets, the soul gospel sounds of 60‘s and 70‘s, Aretha Franklin’s classic songs, Mavis Staples, Bob Dylan and contemporary gospel giants such as Kirk Franklin.

Phil Heuzenroeder, MMGC’s Music Director says “I am hugely passionate about singing together, and for me, gospel music is the most powerful and unifying music to sing. I love its uplifting power and its passion as the music expresses the history of struggle of African and African-American people.

I’m fascinated by Gospel music’s long history and evolution as a musical culture and its central place in worship and community. I strive for MMGC to interpret its meaning in a secular community environment and discover how it speaks to our daily lives here in Australia.”
