Today we remember Constable Edward O’Neill who died in the line of duty – 3 May 1922 💙
Constable O’Neill joined Victoria Police in December 1920 and sadly died 3 May 1922 from injuries sustained in an accident riding his police horse. He was just 35 years, leaving behind his wife Coral and their 3 young children.
Prior to joining Victoria Police, Edward had served his country with distinction on the First World War battlefields of Gallipoli, Egypt and the Western Front of France and Belgium. After he returned to Australia in 1917 Edward did it tough, struggling to find work while taking care of his family. His role with Victoria Police was a new beginning for Edward and his family.
In 2022 our Blue Ribbon Foundation Horsham branch were proud to honour the life and service of Constable Edward O’Neill with the dedication of the Oncology Treatment Ward at Wimmera Cancer Centre, Horsham named in his honour. The Branch provided the funding for the centre with incredible support from all their volunteers, sponsors and the local community.
His distinguished service to our community will always be remembered.

Today we remember the local Police member who gave his life in the line of duty.
About 2.47 pm Sunday 3 May 1964 First Constable Denman received a telephone call from Aileen Wilkinson of Knox Street Numurkah. She complained that her boyfriend Kim Christian was armed with a shot gun and beating on the back door of her home. Denman attended almost immediately. He ran to the rear of the house and approached Christian whose firearm discharged fatally wounding the Constable. Christian later claimed he had not known that Denman was behind him. He said he had felt something touch his shoulder and had moved backwards at which time the gun accidentally discharged. It was only then that he saw that the policeman had been shot and he immediately went to the local police station and reported the death. Despite his protestations of innocence he was charged with the Constable’s murder. Later presented at the Shepparton Supreme Court on a charge of manslaughter he was acquitted after a four day trial.
In 2022 we re-dedicated the Ray Denman Short Stay Unit, which had been relocated and expanded with the re-development of the Shepparton Hospital, the unit named in his honour was funded by our Blue Ribbon Foundation Shepparton branch. It is a fitting tribute for his service and Constable Denman’s daughter, Gail, had also worked at the Goulburn Valley Hospital.
We will always remember First Constable Ray Denman
