Every worker regardless of visa status has the right to a safe, fair and respectful workplace.
Today, we join the global community in commemorating Workers' Memorial Day, honouring those who have been killed, injured or made ill as a result of workplace hazards, while reaffirming our commitment to safer working conditions for all. The commemoration was held at the National Workers Memorial, located within the National Triangle in the ACT.
For migrant workers on temporary visas, including international students, this day carries particular significance. Many face additional challenges such as insecure employment, limited knowledge of workplace rights and barriers to reporting unsafe conditions factors that can heighten exposure to both physical and psychosocial risks.
Under this year’s theme, “Good psychosocial working environments: A pathway to thriving workers and strong organisations,” there is a clear call to recognise and address the psychosocial pressures that can impact migrant workers, including fear of job loss, visa-related concerns, exploitation and workplace isolation.
Psychosocial hazards must be proactively identified, addressed and effectively managed to ensure that all workers regardless of background or visa status can work in environments that are safe, supportive and conducive to wellbeing.
