30 April 2026 Tim Miller Lids4Kids (L4Ks)

Lids4Kids was founded in 2019 by Tim Miller to recycle plastic caps which, at that time, were going into landfill. For what L4Ks has achieved, Tim was recognised as the ACT Local Hero in 2021.
The L4Ks of 2026 is very different to what Tim started. Tim was a guest in May 2023. Today he explained the changes and where his organisation is going in the future.

When Tim first shared his L4Ks plan on FaceBook it was shared 800,000 times in 48 hours. If 10% of the Canberra community signs up to L4Ks, it will help to gain political support for the program.
L4Ks recycles up to 50 types of items. In under 3 months 10 million lids are gathered for recycling.

Visit the L4Ks centre adjacent Fyshwick markets. Helpers are welcome‼️ You can also get your “zero waste warrior tub” to collect your recyclables like lights bulbs, tooth paste tubes, nuts blots screws, anything metal, bread tags, sim and credit cards.
FYI, you can exchange your full “Swap&Go” tubs in all labour clubs and other sporting clubs e.g. in Phillip, Woden, Cooleman Court.

👉Lids4Kids is located at:
7/141 Canberra Ave, Fyshwick ACT 2609
👉It’s open 7 days/wk 10am—8pm M-F; and 10am-2pm on Sat & Sun

Other information:
Commingled plastic (blister packs for medications) are recycled by Pharmacycle in Sydney and are accepted by L4Ks to provide to them. Alternatively, if you shop at Chemist Warehouse you could give them your blister packs which may encourage them to recycle.
Larger electronic items like TVs are accepted by the Mugga tip; small electronic items like PCs, laptops are accepted by Office Works
Let’s all do our bit to make a more sustainable planet.🌍

23 April 2026 Ken Hall, ACT Rural Fire Services
Ken is the Director of Operations at the ACT RFS. He talked about the changes that are occurring within the rural fire agencies, using technology to better detect fires as well as maintain situational awareness, and how this gets reflected with community-facing systems such as 'Hazards Near Me' and agency websites. Ken also talked about his experience with major fires he has been involved in over the past 30 years as a paid staff member in predominantly volunteer services such as the ACT RFS, South Australian Country Fire Service, and as a NSW RFS District and Regional Manager, and about the value of the Australian volunteer culture.

It was a very interesting talk and provided some relevant and helpful hyperlinks!

16 April 2026: Dr Janiece Moylan spoke about The Delacato Method
What if reading difficulties aren’t about intelligence or effort—but about how the brain and body learned to move? Dr Janiece Moylan’s pioneering work using the Delacato Method is transforming how children and adults overcome reading challenges by rewiring the foundations of learning itself. For decades, reading struggles have been treated as academic problems. Dr Moylan, a retired academic, has challenged that assumption. Her use of the Delacato Method has shown that movement, neurological development, and reading are deeply connected. Extraordinary results have been achieved.

9 April 2026: Niki Savva spoke about her life and latest book, Earthquake. A record number of 127 attendees and fans managed to squeeze in to the venue today!
Niki Savva is an award-winning political commentator and author. She was a staffer to former Prime Minister, John Howard and former treasurer Peter Costello, and is a member of the board of Old Parliament House.
The launch of her latest book, Earthquake, at the ANU Meet The Author late last year was a sellout. Mark Kenny has written that Earthquake is "a damning account of the election that shook Australia." Just last week Niki wrote that the modern Liberal Party is on the brink of extinction.
Her other book, So Greek, is also meant to be an enjoyable read.

2 April 2026 Phil Domaschenz, Nusa Tenggara Association (NTA)

Phil, the Executive Officer with the NTA, has been a Spiral guest in the past. He provided an update on their continuing work with poor farming communities in Indonesia. NTA has a proud Canberra history stretching back to 1988.
In their latest Annual Report, CEO Dr James Fox said he is "proud of our volunteers and the dedicated fieldworkers who work long hours under difficult conditions to make us a model NGO. For a minnow in the sea of development, we do a whale of a job." This report justifies that claim and is well worth looking at.
All funds collected today will go to the purchase of a water tank.

19 March 2026: Colin Johnson spoke with us about his Australian Treasury's Overseas Service

Colin has had an adventurous life working as a Commonwealth Treasury officer across ‘the arc of instability’ countries. He held a diplomatic post covering SE Asia during the Asian financial crisis period, lived in Jakarta, Indonesia during the downfall of the Soeharto regime and the collapse of the economy and was seconded to the UN to work in East Timor after Dili was burnt by the departing Indonesians following the vote for independence. Further experiences included Solomon Islands (RAMSI) and Papua New Guinea where he worked with John Eyers.

Gemma Sisia AM, The School of St Jude

Gemma had an inspirational story to tell. In 1983, living on a sheep and cattle farm 80km north of Armidale, she saw Bob Geldof and Live Aid raising funds for Africans suffering a massive drought. Why did she go to Uganda in 1994? In 2002, Gemma founded The School of St Jude in Tanzania. She now oversees one primary school and two secondary schools over three sites, around 330 staff plus 1,800 primary and secondary students and supports around 400 university students. Why St Jude? St Jude is the patron saint of the impossible, desperate and lost causes. All funds collected were donated to this very worthwhile cause.
Also represented were a former graduate, Faith Samwel who went on to graduate as a Civil Engineer and Johnson who works in administration.
