We also plan to conduct medical camps in rural areas on cancer screening and psychological issues including education against sexual abuse.

We dedicate ourselves to providing culturally sensitive and comprehensive palliative care in Sri Lanka and for multicultural communities in Australia, through training, support, and vital community outreach. Together with a few doctors in Australia, we have formed a non-profit organization called “PAALAM – The Bridge to Humanity (PBH) to address the significant gaps in Palliative Care services and support in Sri Lanka and among immigrant and multicultural populations in Australia. Our mission is to ensure that everyone with a terminal illness has access to comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and compassionate palliative care, regardless of their location, background, or beliefs. Our main aim is to improve the palliative care services in Sri Lanka by providing medical training and teaching to the health and allied health professionals in palliative care along with along with administrative and financial support and psychological counselling. We collaborate with other Australia and Sri Lanka based non-profit organisations.

Yesterday’s Evening of Compassion was also an opportunity to share the growing journey of collaboration between PAALAM – The Bridge to Humanity (PBH) and Pallium India.

The evening provided an informative insight into Pallium India’s work in Karnataka, particularly its developing programme in Bengaluru, as well as its wider palliative-care work across India. We also shared how PBH and Pallium India are working together to strengthen access to compassionate, comprehensive palliative care — in India, among CALD communities in Australia, and in other areas of need.

Our sincere thanks to our long time PBH ambassador Mr Sam Murthi for organising the evening, ABC broadcaster Ms Adrienne Francis for so warmly MC’ing and guiding the program, and Mr Tony Fraser and Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand for generously hosting us at their Canberra venue.

We were honoured to welcome Her Excellency Ms Sarojini Sreenivasan, High Commissioner of Mauritius to Australia, as our Chief Guest, and thank her for her thoughtful and inspiring words.

Dr Raj Rajadorai spoke about palliative care and Voluntary Assisted Dying in the ACT, while Dr Ganes Pranavan shared the work of PAALAM – The Bridge to Humanity, our collaboration with Pallium India, and the importance of improving access to compassionate palliative care for CALD communities in Australia, India and across the developing world.

A meaningful evening of conversation, connection and a shared commitment to ensuring that compassionate care reaches everyone who needs it.

A Peaceful Death — A Dignified Choice

A deeply moving account by Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, sharing his personal experience of helping his elderly mother have a peaceful and dignified end of life.

His reflections remind us of something we often forget: when cure is no longer possible, care still is.

At the end of life, the goal of medicine need not always be to prolong life at any cost. Sometimes, the greatest care is to relieve suffering, respect the person’s wishes, and allow them to spend their final moments in comfort, dignity and surrounded by the people they love.

Death is not a failure of medicine.
A peaceful death can be the final expression of compassionate care.

This is the essence of palliative care — adding life to days, rather than simply adding days to life.

An important conversation for doctors, families and society.
