"What happens when I'm gone?"

That’s a question many parents and family members of people with disability ask themselves.

No one wants to think about the day they won't be here to run it all, so making a solid plan for the future is one of the most important things a family can do.

To help you get started, you’re invited to a free, practical workshop in Canberra on creating a Drop Dead Box.

A Drop Dead Box is a central place for all the practical plans, key information, and safeguards your family needs so the person you love can thrive when you’re no longer here.

This is the time of year when many families with high school students with disability start to think about employment.

Whether your child is in Year 12, still has a few years of formal schooling left, or has recently left school, there's much you can do to help them figure out how to explore the world of work.

Customised Employment is a highly successful approach to employment for people with disability. It's an approach that matches a job seeker's strengths and interests to an employer's needs.

If you're new to Customised Employment and want to learn more, we've scheduled an introductory webinar for later in October.

You'll see real-life examples of Customised Employment in action and will learn some simple ways you can put it into action in 15-minute chunks of time, no matter the age and support needs of your child.

This morning, we kicked off the Inclusion Seekers: Building community series with a one-hour introductory session. We heard wonderful stories from some of last year's Inclusion Seekers and learned how this year's series will unfold.

We've now opened registrations for the second phase of this series: a four-part course teaching an effective way to support people with disability to forge greater connections and genuine friendships within their local communities.

People who complete the course will have the opportunity to apply for a micro-grant in 2027 to help bring their community connection projects to life!

You don't have to have attended today's introductory session to join the course, which begins on 5 November.

Last year, our friends at Belonging Matters in Victoria invited Tim and Bridget Vogt from Starfire Cincinnati to run an event series called Inclusion Seekers: Building Community.

By the end of the series, ten people with disability (the ‘Inclusion Seekers’) and their supporters were given micro-grants to run small community-building events in their local communities.

Each event:
✨ was designed by the person and their supporters around the person’s interests and passions
✨ made a genuine contribution to the community
✨ was an opportunity for the person to get to know others who shared their interests.

The result? The people involved made a tangible difference in their communities and have built connections with local people that have persisted and grown.

We were so excited about the outcomes of the Victorian series that this year we decided to team up with Belonging Matters to host the event so that even more people with disability can be involved.

The introductory session takes place at 9:30 am tomorrow. There's still time to register!
