𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞!
We’re excited to announce that one of the Network’s champions Professor Hugh Possingham has agreed to match every donation to QTPN up to $5,000 before 30 June 2026! As Hugh says, “Most of Australia’s threatened species are plants - and the majority can be saved by community mobilisation and relatively small investments. Your donation might save an entire species!”
https://www.anpc.asn.au/donate-to-queensland-threatened-plant-network/

For the last 3 years, Plant Conservation Australia has received government funding to pilot the Network. In this time, the QTPN has achieved great things. See here for some highlights:https://www.anpc.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/12a-QTPN-On-the-Front-Line-MARCH26-promotional-slides.pdf

However, this funding runs out at the end of June and the Network’s future remains uncertain. We have now drafted a funding strategy to help us in our efforts to become self-funded, and you can help us with a matched donation as we transition to this next phase.

Get in quick! Only 2 days left (31 May) until the early bird registration period ends for CYCAD 2026 - the 13th International Conference on Cycad Biology. Australia holds the highest diversity of cycad species, so is a fitting context for a conference which will highlight cutting-edge research and critical conservation efforts. The conference will be held in Sydney from 17-22 August 2026. See the link for all the details:

CELEBRATING THE 13TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CYCAD BIOLOGY. Cycads first appeared approximately 280 million years ago as some of the earliest seed plants. Despite this remarkable persistence, they are now among the planet’s most imperilled organisms. Australia holds the highest diversity of cy...

Introducing our first two confirmed speakers for APCC15!

Dr. Rachael Gallagher is a plant ecologist and conservation biologist at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at Western Sydney University. She will present a keynote for the Sustaining Diversity subtheme titled: “Into the wild: addressing plant extinction through establishment of new plant populations”.

Rachael will outline gaps in ecological and conservation knowledge that hamper current reintroduction success, such as a lack of a comprehensive list of at-risk species and explore solutions. She will also discuss the use of emerging market mechanisms for funding initiatives for reducing plant extinction risk.

Barbara Waterhouse is a retired botanist who worked with DAFF’s Northern Australian Quarantine Strategy from 1990 to 2023. She will present a keynote for the Biosecurity, Invasive Threats and Post-invasion Challenges subtheme titled: “Stemming the tide: biosecurity and conservation challenges in northern Australia.”

Barbara will present examples of current threats and pathways for new introductions into northern Australia, with a focus on the Torres Strait region, drawing on over 30 years of experience in early detection biosecurity programs. She will also outline challenges for biosecurity and conservation arising from mistaken identity, taxonomic uncertainty, rigid application of biosecurity precepts and potential unintended consequences of well-intentioned responses.

Today is the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026! 🌿

This year's theme is “Acting locally for global impact”, which highlights the essential role of local action in achieving the Goals and Targets of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

It emphasizes that implementation ultimately happens on the ground, through the decisions and efforts of governments, indigenous peoples and local communities, businesses, and individuals, each contributing within their own contexts.

By connecting local initiatives to global ambitions, the campaign underscores how diverse, place-based actions collectively drive progress towards the 2050 Vision of living in harmony with nature, while reinforcing the importance of coherence, inclusivity, and shared responsibility across all levels of society.
