Smile with Kids is a charity organisation in Cairns which work to support young people impacted by the ongoing effects of the Fukushima nuclear crisis since the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and tsunami in 2011. *Our Purpose and objects

今も放射能の影響に不安を感じながら過ごしている福島の子供達が、ケアンズの大自然の中で、羽を伸ばして過ごせることを願い、海外で自分の意見や素直な想いを伝える機会を持ち、異文化体験を通じて、視野が広がるきっかけを！また日本に帰ってからも、ケアンズでの経験を自分の考えと共に伝え、未来の平和につながることを願い活動しています。日本とオーストラリアの子供達の交流の虹の架け橋となり、子供達の夢と希望を応援します。

We would like to inviting children living in Fukushima to Cairns for reflesh ment homestay program.The area around Fukushima has been facing serious problems after the nuclear disaster.4 children came to Cairns in 2015 and 6 children in 2016, 8 children came in 2017, 8 children in 2018 and 2019.

We are pleased to report that the total amount raised at the Wa Arigatou Event, held on May 9, was $8,419.86.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated and supported this event in so many different ways.

Thank you so much.

The donations will be allocated as follows:

$3,000 will donate to Freshwater State School, Cairns State High School, and James Cook University.

$419.86 will donate to Caravonica State School to support venue-related costs

$5,000 donated to Smile with Kids to support children in Fukushima.

去年トライアングルの皆が、JDOHやリフレッシュキャンプを全力でサポートしてくれて、とても励まされたこともあり、皆のチャレンジを全力でサポートすることはその恩返しでもあり、

そして真剣に
次世代の人々が、自分達の想い大切に
チャレンジすること
すごく大切と思ってて、
その想いでSmile with Kidsの活動もしています。

皆で何度か話し合って
小さくても、
心を込めてイベントを。

と、スタートしたのが、

準備がはじまると
目指すビジョンがだんだんと大きくなっていって@@
皆で全力で準備中です！

イベント準備は、大変で
チャレンジもいっぱいですが

その都度話し合い

初めてのイベントで
ステージや出店担当や
ボランティア担当
ラッフルなども初めての中

やってみる！

と一つ一つチャレンジしていく姿に
なんだかとても励まされています。

そして他州や日本からも
熱い想いでご参加くださる方々がいて

It’s almost here!

hope that by taking on this challenge as working holiday makers, it inspires others to step forward and try something new too.

to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone in Cairns who has supported us.

also want to create a space that values human connection, just like JDOH.

And to share the beauty of Japan — the spirit of Wa.

Smile with Kids is also supporting us as a co-host.

Last year, the Triangle team gave their full support to JDOH and the Refresh Camp, which truly encouraged us.

Supporting everyone’s challenges this time is our way of giving back.

We truly believe it’s important for the next generation to cherish their passions and take on challenges seriously.
(This belief is also at the heart of Smile with Kids.)

After several discussions, we decided:
Even if it’s small, let’s create something meaningful, with heart.

That’s how it all began.
But as we started preparing, our vision kept growing…
and now we’re all working together with everything we’ve got!

Event preparation isn’t easy — it comes with many challenges.

But each time, we talk things through and move forward together.

For many of working holiday people, this is first time organizing an event — managing the stage, stalls, volunteers, raffle, and more.
Still, everyone keeps saying, “Let’s try!”
Watching each person take on these challenges one by one has been incredibly inspiring.

We’re also honored to have passionate participants joining us from other states and from Japan.

From Fukushima, members of the Fukushima Himawari Project will be joining us as well.

This is a charity event, and all proceeds will be donated to local primary schools in Cairns and to support children in Fukushima.

As this is our first event, we have been supported by so many people.
To all the volunteers, stallholders, performers, supporters in every form, those cheering from afar, and everyone reading this—
Thank you so much.

This is a special opportunity unique to the working holiday experience —
full of challenges, amazing performances, and wonderful stalls.

There will also be special collaborations you can only see at this event, so don’t miss out!

スマイルウィズキッズも共催というかたちで お手伝いさせていただくことになりました。

Dear everyone who supported JDOH,
I hope you are all doing well.

Those of us from the working holiday community who were involved in JDOH have been thinking about how we can express our gratitude to the Cairns locals who have supported us so warmly and share the beauty of Japanese culture and the spirit of “wa” (harmony).

From these thoughts and intentions of the Triangle team and the working holiday members, the “Wa Arigato” Event has been born.

Smile with Kids will also be supporting this event as a co-organiser.

Date: Saturday, 9 May
Time: 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: Caravonica State School, Cairns

In addition, guests from Japan will be visiting Cairns from the Fukushima Himawari Project.

Please note that this is not a JDOH event. However, it is an event created to express our heartfelt “Wa Arigato” (thank you with harmony) to everyone who has supported.

It will be a space to share Japanese culture and the spirit of appreciation.

If you would like to support or be involved in any way, we would be truly grateful.

The Wa Arigato Event is also a charity event to support local children and children in Fukushima.

Kokoro first came to Cairns as a Year 7 student 10 years ago through a project.
Then, during a challenging time in her life two years ago, she decided to take a break from university and returned to Cairns on a working holiday.

We are so happy to share that she has now successfully graduated from university 👏🥺

Having overcome many challenges, Kokoro has reached this important milestone, and she would like to share a message with everyone in Cairns.

ケアンズの皆様へ

渡邊こころです。
中学1年生の際のリフレッシュキャンプ、そして大学生の時のワーキングホリデーでは、大変お世話になりました。

この度、無事に大学を卒業し、春から看護師として働くことになりました。

大学生の頃、休学してオーストラリアで1年間過ごすと決めた当時の私は、心が弱り、先の見えない不安と恐怖の中で日々を過ごしていました。どうしたらよいのか分からず、暗い気持ちでいっぱいだったことを覚えています。

そんな時に思い出したのが、中学生の頃に訪れたケアンズでの思い出でした。大自然の中でのびのびと過ごした、あの温かく幸せな時間が心に残っており、「もう一度あの場所で心をリフレッシュしたい」という思いから、渡航を決意しました。

ワーキングホリデーの1年間は、楽しいことだけでなく、辛いことや悩むこともありましたが、多くの方々との出会いを通して、たくさんの気づきや学びを得ることができました。それらはすべて、私の人生にとってかけがえのない、大変貴重な経験となりました。そして、心も少しずつ回復し、無事に復学して大学生活を送ることができました。ケアンズで再び過ごすことができ、本当に良かったと心から感じています。

これまで出会った皆様の温かいサポートや優しさがあったからこそ、さまざまな困難を乗り越え、多くの経験を積むことができ、今の自分があります。皆様には、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。

この感謝の気持ちを忘れず、これからも一歩一歩大切に歩んでいきたいと思います。

どうか皆様も、お身体を大切に、幸せな日々をお過ごしください。

Dear everyone in Cairns,
My name is Kokoro Watanabe.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for all the support and kindness you showed me during the refresh camp when I was in my first year of junior high school, and again during my working holiday as a university student.

I am happy to share that I have successfully graduated from university and will be starting my career as a nurse this spring.

When I decided to take a leave of absence from university and spend a year in Australia, I was going through a very difficult time. I felt emotionally fragile and lived each day with uncertainty, fear, and no clear sense of direction.

During that time, I remembered my experience in Cairns as a junior high school student. The warm and joyful memories of spending time surrounded by nature stayed deeply in my heart. With a strong desire to refresh my mind in that same place once again, I made the decision to return.

My year on a working holiday was not always easy. There were challenges and moments of struggle, but through the many wonderful people I met, I gained invaluable insights and life lessons. These experiences have become irreplaceable treasures in my life. Little by little, my heart began to heal, and I was able to return to university and complete my studies. I truly feel grateful that I had the opportunity to spend time in Cairns again.

It is thanks to the warmth, support, and kindness of everyone I met that I was able to overcome difficulties, grow, and become who I am today. I am filled with deep appreciation.

I will carry this gratitude with me and continue to move forward, one step at a time.

すみれちゃん、素晴らしいスピーチでした。中3で、ケアンズ に来てくれた時にも、毎日スピーチしてくれて、笑顔でお菓子を美味しそうに食べてたすみれちゃんが、今では素敵な大人の女性になって、またこうやってスピーチして大切な想いを届けくださったことに感動でした🥺本当にありがとう。

One of very special moment was the speech by Sumire.
She joined our project in 2017 when she was in Year 9, and now she has just graduated from university. I came to support her as she spoke at this event 🥺

When she came to Cairns as a Year 9 student, you spoke every day and enjoyed sweets with such a bright smile. Seeing her now as a confident and wonderful young woman sharing your message was deeply moving. Thank you so much.

And to everyone we were able to reconnect with and meet on this special day, thank you from the bottom of our heart.

皆さん、こんにちは。
今日はこの「Sounds of Prayer – In Remembrance of 3.11」という大切な場でお話しする機会をいただき、ありがとうございます。

私は福島県出身で、現在は留学のためにオーストラリアで生活しています。そして今年の1月にはWestern Sydney大学を卒業しました。 今日は、日本から少し離れた場所にいる一人として、そして東日本大震災を経験した一人として、私の記憶と想いをお話ししたいと思います。

2011年3月11日、東日本大震災が起きたとき、私は8歳で、自宅にいました。 突然鳴り響いた、地震警報の音。 あの独特な音は、今でもはっきりと耳に残っています。 その直後、今まで経験したことのない大きな揺れが来ました。 家の中の物が揺れ、周りでは人々が大きな声で家族の名前を呼び、安否を確認する叫び声が聞こえていました。子どもだった私は、何が起きているのか完全には理解できず、ただならないことが起きているということだけは、強く感じていました。 私の家は津波の被害を受ける地域ではありませんでした。 それでも、テレビで流れていた津波の映像は、今でも忘れることができません。 黒い大きな波が町をのみ込み、家や車が流されていく光景。 あまりにも現実離れしていて、まるで映画のように見えました。

でもそれは、実際に日本で起きている出来事でした。 震災の後、私は大きな波を見るのが怖くなりました。 今でも津波の映像を見ると、当時感じた恐怖がよみがえってきます。 どれだけ年月が経っても、あの日の記憶と恐怖は、体のどこかに残り続けています。

もう一つ、強く覚えていることがあります。 それは、父のことです。 私の父は消防士で、震災が起きたあと、救助のために現場へ向かいました。 その間、しばらく父とは会えませんでした。 私は、とても心細く、不安でした。 もしかしたら自分の家がなくなってしまうかもしれない。 もしかしたら家族が離れ離れになってしまうかもしれない。もしかしたら、もう2度と父は帰ってこないかもしれない… そんな恐怖を、幼いながらに感じていました。

あれから15年、長い時間が経ちました。 私の故郷では、今でも毎年3月11日に、震災の犠牲になった方々のために黙祷が捧げられます。子どもの頃の私は、ただ「怖かった」という気持ちしかありませんでした。 でも大人になるにつれて、あの震災がどれほど多くの人の人生を変えてしまったのか、少しずつ理解するようになりました。今では街は少しずつ片付けられ、復興も進んできました。 新しい建物が建ち、人々の生活も少しずつ戻っています。 しかし、震災前とまったく同じ姿に戻ることはありません。あの災害は家族を、家を、建物を人々の生活と共に奪っていきました。どれだけ新しい建物をつくろうが、それらは決して取り戻すことはできません。

震災のあと、日本では防災への意識も大きく変わりました。 学校では避難訓練や防災教育がより重視されるようになり、地域でも人々が集まって防災訓練を行うようになりました。 家の中でも、非常食や防災バッグを準備することが当たり前になりました。 災害はいつ起こるかわかりません。 だからこそ、あの経験を「記憶」にするだけではなく、未来を守るための「教訓」として生かしていくことが大切なのだと思います。そして、私は今でも思います。 人の記憶には、いろいろな形がありますが、 その中でも「音」は、とても強く記憶に残るものだと思います。 ある音を聞いた瞬間に、過去の出来事や感情が一気によみがえることがあります。 私にとって、地震警報の音は、まさにその一つです。 あの音を聞くと、今でも胸が少し締めつけられるような気持ちになります。 でも同時に、その音は、私に「忘れてはいけない出来事」があることを思い出させてくれます。

今日、この場所で皆さんと一緒に祈り、思いを共有できることに、深く感謝しています。 東日本大震災で亡くなられたすべての方々に、心から哀悼の意を表します。 そして、この出来事を忘れず、これからも語り続けていくことが、私たちにできる大切なことだと思います。

Thanks to all of you, we were able to successfully hold the 15th Japan Day of Hope, and invite children from Fukushima to Cairns.
We are also truly grateful for your support in many different forms.
Wishing you all a wonderful and fulfilling 2026.
